I've had this problem for awhile but never bothered to fix it because I don't really watch any video/movie files on this machine, but right now I have ton holiday films I'd like to watch but can't.

When ever I play a movie, the picture is VERY dark and only displays in red, some also don't have sound. I've downloaded quicktime player and the latest Divx but it doesn't solve anything.

what os, what gfx card

if it's semi dislplaying i'd maybe suggest drivers, use ffdshow from the link above but before hand uninstall all codec packs you may have

I'm using a 7800 GTX with the latest Nvidia drivers, ForceWare Release 169.21. Just to be sure I downloaded and reinstalled. OS is WinXP Pro.

I've uninstalled all codecs and tried FFDshow and done the same with cccp, however the results are always the same, just a dark red picture.

tried playing in media player classic?

'some' drivers have problems with video playback, you usually see this in xp x64 though..

Where are the files from exactly, are you sure they're intact and working? If it's something from a camera it could be something proprietary, though it shouldn't be. Grab MediaInfo to see if it can ID the format.
