What computer upgrade has made you go WOW?

Windows 95 and XP were also big upgrades in my eyes, it took me a long time to get used to not using DOS!

That was what most put me off about Windows XP. I found it hard to conceive of an OS that didn't have DOS underlying it the same way Windows 95 and previous had.

I'm sure it's as much a quirk of my computing upbringing, I was using command prompts from probably the mid 80s, used to the level of control they gave me. I guess in part it's one of the reasons why I prefer Linux these days, I love to get my hands 'dirty' at the prompt, writing scripts to do stuff just like I used to write batch files and such like back in the day.

A lot of them aren't that big a deal when we look back (ram, hdd, cpu, vga etc).

You obviously never lived through the old days where going from 1/2 meg of memory to 1 meg was life changing > and then to 4 meg > and then to a whopping 16 meg which made the computer fly.
The difference between a 256k graphics card to a 2 meg graphics card was awesome for DTP work.

ATI 9800XT to Nvidia 6800GT and then wow again for going SLI.
Getting a Voodoo 2 card to compliment my rage 3d pro was awesome too :)

My first 3DFX, if you never played 3d games before acceleration you can't imagine the jump in terms of speed and quality it made.

In order:

1. 3dfx Voodoo SLI (Orchid Righteous cards)
2. Windows 2000
3. Hitachi CML174 16ms LCD monitor
4. Core2 CPUs
5. Windows Vista

For me, years ago it was going from 32Mb RAM up to 128Mb. It cost a lot of money but was sooo worth it. Just to see my mates face. I thought he **** a loaf.

Dial up to 512k Cable (great being a LPB in games ;))

17" TFT to 20.1" Dell Widescreen

Mechanical HD to Solid State Hard Disk

Onboard 2D to Voodoo 1 Graphics :D

edit: as mentioned by Tele

Yep I remember it well. The 'click' of the 3DFX kicking into 3D mode for Turok was epic. The textures look so basic now but back then it was 'HD' compared to software rendering.

Someone should start a petition to bring back the mechanical "click" for modern Nvidia cards whenever a game loads :D

Installing my first Auzentech Meridian soundcard and dumping shoddy Creative Lab's cards for good.

I played back a few ogg files and was blown away by the vibrancy and clarity. Not to mention that the thing looks the dogs balls out of the box. I couldn't live without that thing now.

in terms of change, yeah ssd for me, as most other stuff i have just purchased mid range, getting a SSD was for me a "wow" i can see the difference!

For me I think it was After market coolers or my old Radeon 9800XT, Prob the coolers though as I still get a Semi when I hear my fans fire up. :p

seeing my mates amiga for the first time compared to my atari st

my A1200 upgrade from my A500 :)

2 voodoo 2 cards in sli and playing Unreal, the intro blew my jaw off.

seeing my first phone bill in the 56k team fortress classic league / everquest 1 days. That really made me go wow!

Mine would have to be:-

1. Orchid 4mb 3D to 8mb Voodoo 2. (3D @ 1024x768 :) )
2. 8mb Voodoo 2 to Voodoo 5500 AGP.
3. 56k to 512BB.
4. 1 x CRT to 1 x CRT & 1 x LCD. (duel screens are a godsend)
5. 7200 RPM HDD to Falcon 60gb SSD.

The biggest Wow being the SSD, such a leap in performance booting up and copying files etc.
