Found this Bios update from ATI, so you could check it against your existing Bios.
Don`t` know if it will solve your problem, but it might help in some way.

Is it possible that this HD5870 is a Mac Pro version and that's why the drivers don't work?
Are there any physical differences? This card has a massive extended backplate on it with a handle type thing at the end. I have only seen that on Mac Pro models.
Ignore the XFX logo, that isn't meant to be there. There was an ATI sticker there.
*edit* ah, no it isnt. But I can't find a picture of a 5870 with this backplate on it anywhere.
