What could be wrong with my laptop?

I've replaced the CPU in my laptop from a Pentium dc 6100 2Ghz to an i5 560m 2c4t 2.6GHz CPU, which is listed as compatible with my motherboard in the service manual. This cpu did work "fine" with the laptop for a month or so.

However the laptop kept shutting down at when it reached 75c in games. This isn't that hot at all for a laptop, so I assumed some bios protection had been reset when I changed CPU. I am sure the laptop had previously gone over that temperature before with the old dc chip without shutting down.

So I tried to go into the bios to have a look. However, my laptop now turns itself off, as if the power cable was pulled off, about 2 seconds after turning it on. No beeping. Sometimes I just about get a flash of POST before it turns itself off, Weirdly, it works without the fan plugged in but I am only brave/stupid enough to let it run for six seconds or so without the fan plugged in...

I've tried switching over to the old cpu, disconnecting everything from the motherboard, using the VGA port... no success. I've got a new fan on the way in case something broke when I replaced (and cleaned it) when swapping CPUs. Any other idea what it could be?

It's a HP Dv3-4100sa. It's pretty old so more a 'project' than a useful laptop now, although with an SSD, 8GB of DDR3 and that i5 it will be good enough for most things still :)

Do you have it on the latest bios, some systems mention compatibility but only when on later releases etc. Might be worth checking.

Have you double checked where you plugged the CPU fan in? If it's in the wrong slot, it'll still work but the laptop might shut itself down if it can't detect a CPU fan.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm pretty sure I updated the bios before I swapped the CPU over, so I don't think that is it (plus it was running fine for a couple of days). I've since swapped back to the old CPU and it still does it!

I've reseated /thermaled the cooler for both the CPU and GPU a couple of times now.

The fan is definitely in the right power socket on the motherboard- there is only one and it spins up when I power the system on. I'll just have to wait and see when the new fan arrives!
