what could be wrong?

my mother has a hp g6000 laptop spare after she got a new one due to this one not working. It seems to be a fairly random error, sometimes it will work no problem all day but others it will just freeze up after a few minutes or hours. I have tried several fresh installs and a different hard drive, and even then the most recent time it just froze at 25% unpacking the files when installing windows 7.

also the touch mouse pad thingy hasn't worked for a while and driver changes/updates don't seem to fix it.

so what are the possible causes of this behavior?

i was thinking its a memory issue but it still did it when i replaced the memory with stuff from my old laptop, i am going to run memtest to check this anyway, how long should i run it for to be sure?

a couple of passes should suffice, all do the built in hard drive check from bios if it has one, if these both pass you could be looking at mobo or cpu fault.
