Given that iirc, fuel is not an issue for you Jez, then I say get an e39 M5 and REALLY upset Fox. ;):D

730D or an A8 would probably be my choice, though I could not motivate myself to buy either last year when I was looking for a B car, hence the RS4. But for 20K you should be able to get a nice car that has already had a big chunk of its value lost and if you find a good one it should last you FOR EVER!

Out of interest, what put you off them? :)

I was not ready to drive around in big barges. I have had performance cars for many years, you get used to them, but I told myself I needed something sensible for work, so thought a B car and then a toy. As it turned out I simply found myself bored in the barges and great though they are, I did not feel I could live with one right now.

No good having a B car if you always drive the A car.

Very true. Perhaps i am missing out by looking at these cars.

I really dont know what i want really to be honest, i just know that i want a new toy and am not 100% happy with anything on the market.

I dont see the purpose in dispensing with a car you paid £8k for 'before it gets worthless' in order to spend £20k on a largely similar car when you do such high mileage. In the grand scheme of things its not worth enough to matter what its residual value is.

Keep the S and run it until it's utterly dead. Then replace it. In the meantime, perhaps spend the cash on a toy.

This goes back to Hosemasters A/B car thing, i dont really want or need two cars, i'd end up only driving one of them yet having the hassle of running and maintaining 2, having 2 lots of insurance, etc etc.

Keeping the S makes sense as there isnt a lot out which is better, but :/

How much of an issue is the mpg really? If it is then my suggestion of an S/CL600 isn't a great one but you will have a car that cost £100K+ new and a V12. If you like the S then you know you'll like the CL also. I don't know that a S/CL55 is going to be that more efficient but it is just as fast if that matters to you and worthy of consideration.

If you're a big engined, effortless performance kind of guy then perhaps check out something like the Chrysler 300C (if I remember my model numbers correctly) 5.7litre version or the Vauxhall Monaro (no automatic available though IIRC). I think an XJR and XKR would also be in the list for consideration. The XKR is quite small inside from what I remember of driving one and I'd prefer the XJR for comfiness.

Explain again whats wrong with the Masserati?

NOTHING you can buy for £20k will be appreciably better than your S430. You are in the lucky situation that you have a car you can keep and 'run into the ground' thats actually as nice as any £20k on the market.
