What country would you move to, if you had the opportunity?

I spent 6 months in China in 2018, and there was a definite anti foreigner sentiment at that time. Other than young women wanting to have a photo with me - I've never been called "handsome" as many times as when I was in China.

where are you planning going to?

Currently here for a short time. Just inland of Denia is the goal (Jalon/Orba Valley if you know it)

Although I had falsely believed it was cheaper inland here which doesn’t seem to be the case.

We are aiming to take a few trips south where it’s a lot cheaper as there’s the temptation to buy something for £150-200k and be mortgage free rather than buy for £400 up here and still have the financial stress of a mortgage for 20 years.

What was supposed to be a 3 year 'project' has now grown to 8 years of living pretty much full time in India.

The ongoing issues back home continue to spell it out to me that I have little to no intention of coming back anytime soon.

It was interesting, I went in 2004, to work for a Chinese company in Tianjin, and they welcomed me as a foreigner with open arms, importing my 'skills'. By the time I left in 2009, (as an industry) they had learnt what they wanted from me, and I felt there was a growing anti-foreigner sentiment in the country - though not necessarily within the company itself.

Yeah i went twice, once in 2012 and again in 2018. There was a stark difference in society in general both times. I was treated fine both times but there was a tension in the air in 2018 that wasn't there in 2012

Yes, reasonably well. Got one friend in Sanet, another slightly further inland at Ontinyent. One of the families used to run one of the restaurants in Orba.

About 10/12 years ago I was close to buying a plot of land in the orange groves with a small finca on it at Benimeli. It wouldn't have been legal though and I wasn't prepared to chance doing it up and hoping for 5 years to pass so I backed/wimped out eventually.

Good luck with it, it's a lovely area :)

Thanks. I think Ontinyent is a little too “out there” for my wife. Benigembla is around the limit I think at ~30 minutes drive to the beach.

Sanet is nice. I go through a few times a week on the bike.
I keep hearing of a superb Tapas place in Benimeli but not been yet.

Which country is the favourite so far in this thread? NZ? It's on our list to visit in the next year or so.

I briefly looked at it but noticed rainfall figures in Auckland are nearly double what we experience here in the North East (UK) and I'm not sure I'd fancy that.

On the flip side - the climate and job situation is a positive. Would be interesting to be involved in engineering projects in another country.

Warm weather country sounds nice but I couldn't live with the bugs that come with it. Scandinavian country like Norway Sweden Denmark. No bugs and largely sensible governments.

Craggy Island for me!

Seriously though, there's some beautiful oldie world villages on the coast of ireland that I'd be happy with

I've already spent a fair bit of time over there but I feel Canada would be an easy choice for me. Calgary or surrounding area. It is and remains the goal for me. When I finish up with my current profession. I aim to settle down in Canada. All my extra-curricular efforts are aiming towards that goal, or at least ensuring that my qualifications give me the best chance of doing so.

I've lived abroad in Germany, HK and Thailand and will be retiring to Thailand as soon as I can sell my London house (gods damn the Truss / Sunak mini-budget for destroying the economy and making this currently impossible!)

I've been married to a Thai for 25 years and we (she, really) have a house there and lots of friends. Yes, it's very hot. Yes, it has a weird democracy. Ex-pat rights are flaky and there's lots of unnecessary bureaucracy around living there but it's massively cheaper than the UK and the golf food is incredible.

if it wasn't for the mingingly gash weather i'd agree! we don't really get seasons in ireland, just marginally warmer rain in summer - interspersed with the odd lovely sunny day which makes the place seem utterly gorgeous (which is usually what everyone imagines ireland to be like) genuinely lovely place, just too damn wet.
