What CPU for Gaming and Design Work?

Hey Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my current system:

First Gen i7 2.6Ghz with Asus Rampage Extreme II, 6gig DDR2, AMD HD6990 Graphics card.

I do a lot of design work and on and off gaming. I'm wondering what the best CPU is for both gaming and design work as the market seems a bit saturated at the moment.

Is it Ivybridge, Ivybridge Extreme, Sandybridge Extreme or Haswell?

I'm not too fussed about over clocking but would like a good performance increase over my current CPU (not that it seems slow at the moment). Upgrading would be good to get the SATA3 and USB 3 Native support though. Perhaps my current CPU is also acting as a bottleneck to my graphics card too!

Shall I upgrade now or wait for a better CPU to come out, such as Haswell Extreme??

Thanks,

Hi.

Well unless you have a specific budget in mind you could go all out for a i7 4930K and never look back.

There are newer CPU's coming soon for the recently released Z97 boards that replace the current 4670K+4770K

Haswell-E and X99 is later in the year apparently.
