Hi

Just planning ahead here folks.

Im wondering what is the minimum processor id need to pair up with 2 x GTX 460s

My Q6600 seems to be more than a match but no motherboards support it anymore

Cheers in advance

I would go for an lynnfield i5 or bloomfield i7. X58 holds some advantages over P55 when it comes to multi-GPUs, not sure how relevant they are to dual GTX460s.

Why on earth would you ever ever ever go SLI or Crossfire?

Why ever not??

To the op:

If your still wanting to keep your Q6600 I would suggest looking around the famous auction site for a 780i 0r a 790i mobo. They can be picked up relatively cheaply. I also think ( but never owned one ) that the 750i mobo is more than capable of doing what you want. I personally have a 790i running the older gtx280's in sli and I have no issues at all.

Nvidia chipsets have performance issues with Intel processors. I recommend to get a cheap x38 or x48 motherboard. Your CPU is good to go for another year then upgrade to Sandbridge.
