RTX 3080
Playing single player AAA games (no e-sport / no 1080p) on Ultra Wide 3440 x 1440 (highest settings I can get with at least 60 FPS but the more measurable FPS the better)

I had R5 5600X + Asus B550 since launch but sold the system last year, starting new.

Don't really want to spend over £300 for CPU,for MB Max £170

I'm aware of Intel 13Th gen arriving very soon but lower end is still over my CPU budget/probably makes no difference in my resolution.
as for AMD Zen 4,not interested.(MB/DDR5 pricing just not worth it)

I was thinking about i5 12600K (nice to have iGPU) + some decent B660 MB so I'll have upgrade option to 13TH gen if I need to.
problem is I think £260-£300 is too much for this chip, since it's competing with 5600X (under £200)

other option will be another 5600X (around £175) but B550 MB prices right now make no sense, even same Asus TUF B550 that I bought for £99 2 years ago is now £150+ and AM5 is end of the line, £150 for it can't be justified.
only upgrade option will be 5800X3D but an 8 core Zen 3 chip priced £400? no thanks.it's not going to make any meaningful difference for my resolution, unless it drops to £280 or so.

but 12600K is still £80+ more expensive than Ryzen 5600X but definitely not £80 better in gaming.

any suggestion?

If you can wait, I would wait until next year, when all the midrange stuff will be available, but based on current prices, I'd probably go with the 12600KF at 230 or the 12700F at 300. Like you said, B550 board prices/availability don't seem to be great right now.

If you care about value then get a 5600 and call it a day, it won't be beaten. If you care about raw performance then that's going to cost, but it would still be best to wait for Zen 4 w/ v-cache.

Right now prices are high but it will be much better next year imo.

I had the same choice back in July and decided to go for a 12400F as a stop gap before the 13th gen were released. I don't do any content creation, just games and office type apps, also on 3440x1440 with a 3080FE.

Having run it for three months or so I don't plan on upgrading, works really well and was relatively low cost.

so do you all agree at this point building new AMD AM4 is a mistake? (again considering my usage) and Intel is the way to go?
I can't wait until next year.maybe can hold another 1 month max.

someone told me if I still go with AM4,I can upgrade to 5800X3D maybe 6 months-1 year since it's going to drops in price significantly and that he thinks that's a worthy upgrade, but I'm not convinced..+ don't think that chip drops in price significantly.

Get a b grade b450 (one where you can flash the bios with a usb stick to make compatible with 5000 series cpus)as limited funds and get a 5000 series cpu.

b450s are still good.

I'm not that budget limited (getting b grade),I don't want to go with B450 that's so dated now I had B550 + 5600X 2 years ago so can't accept anything lower end ,also already have Samsung Gen 4 980 Pro 2TB that B450 can't support.
5800X3D would be the way to go over a 12600K.
5800X3D is £100 over my budget and TBO I think it's over priced for 8 core AM4 chip.
very fast for low resolution gaming but value-wise ,for real work and as general CPU it's not worth £400+
12600K for the resolution I play won't be that far off but most importantly it's £140 cheaper + upgrade option vs dead end platform..
if 5800X3D drops to £300 then I will be interested.

I'm leaning towards 12600K + B660

Fair enough mate.

x3d will probs only be worth it for sim games or open world where there more cpu bound.

The intel 12400 was suppose to match 5600x wasnt it and its about 140 i think or am i thinking of the 11400 ones?. Could get that then move up later?

Similar position to me, planning to buy Black Friday weekend (I have a 3070 and 32GB of 3600C16 DDR4 dual rank waiting), and looking like its going to be between 12400/12600K+B660 and 5600+B550 depending on what comes up in the sales.
Unless the AM4 is considerably cheaper though, it seems to make more sense to go Intel, as at least there will be a 13th gen upgrade path down the road if I so choose and could get a chip at the right price for the performance differential.

If the 5600+B550 works out substantially cheaper than the 12400/B660 option though, I will still consider it, but doesn't seem the best time to buy, considering its the last range of chips for the platform ostensibly. 12400/5600 are pretty neck and neck, with the 12600K a jump up, so if the BF Sales end up with a 12600K or even 12700/K and a B660 at a similar price to the 5600 however, it's basically game over, even if I don't really want to switch to Windows 11. I also have to factor in the higher I go with the chips, the more likely I'll need to factor a cooler/AIO in.

Budget is what it is, and I really want to get the CPU/Motherboard/Case/PSU/1TB SSD as close to £450-500 as possible. I think Case and decent PSU and reasonable quality 1TB SSD is easily achievable in less than £200, so its which platform will give me the most with the other £250-300 leftover, and ideally with as little as possible spent. I cannot justify really ramping up the cost to the build as it'll be a secondary/less used/backup rig; unless I end up swapping things around using it in place of my core rig, but that would push the prices up substantially as I'd want to go upper-midrange.

What comes up as a deal around Black Friday may well end up making the decision for me, if either side has comparably better deals than the other side, that will probably be the decider.
