A friend has a £100 voucher for somewhere and wants to get a new mb and CPU so he's looking at what CPU to get for £100. I said get a Intel but there's really nothing for £100 that is decent except a old i7 920 or 950 tbh and that's what died in his old rig and he would like somit better. So what's his options and are AMD any good these days. I think I saw a fx 8xxx CPU 8 core 4ghz or somit for £125 which sounded kinda good for price but I have no idea if it is any good.

Ideas? No ocuk price links he can't buy from here due to voucher. Just state item ideas of said price range that most places do for around £100 ta.

For pure upgradeability, an i3 4130 or similar + board would be good. However, the 8350 will be faster in games that make use of cores well, like BF4/BF:H for example

What does he do on the PC?

ARMA 3? i3, I wouldn't get the AMD for ARMA, even though it can be optimised and all that stuff the i3 will still win

The problem is, no AMD CPU currently in existence is a full proof upgrade over a clocked i7 (Even the first ones)

I'd just get an FX8320 if I had to, but it's certainly a "side grade" if there ever was one.

Not really for new at least, they gone insane with price hikes on those lately. I had hoped they would have gone to £100 new as it have been the best CPU then but I can find any of them for that much anywhere.

BTW he has a 670 4gb card to go with whatever CPU he goes for.

He said he got a i5 4590. So can't oc it but shouldn't be too far behind my fps in a3 should it vs my 3570k at 4.5ghz but we both have 670 tho he has 4gb version. As often I used to say I had 60fps when he had 35 in arma3 and this is when he had a i7 930 or somit like that with a small oc on. Hopefully he should nearer to what fps I get now yeah?

S1366 boards are worth a lot because they're scarce, can easily sell for 70 quid, or even 90 quid for the top models with sli,usb3, and stuff.
Are you sure his cpu has died, that's something that rarely every dies ?

An i7 920 is buyable for 20 quid...

I'd go for a 2nd hand s1155 system. I paid 106 quid ( 150 euros) for my p8z68-v Gen3 + 2600K and it runs at 4.5 ghz now.

EDIT: Ah he went for a non K Haswell, can always upgrade to a better one later I guess! Per clock the ''new'' ones aren't really much faster than the old ones, if he had a 950 and on a slight OC he'd barely notice a diff now tbh.
If he had a 920 running near stock speed then the change should be big yeah. If it was a 950, then the difference isn't that big: On stock in single threaded calculations about 35-40% difference between them, in (well coded) multi threaded applications only about 5-10% difference between the 2 cpu's.

Haswell penguin anniversary edition and clock it. Put savings towards decent mobo and get a quad down the road.

Simples.

I puh puh picked up one of those, hoping to get a real boost when Broadwell came along. Now it looks like Intel isn't really bothered with it on the desktop, going straight to Skylake where it can get even more revenue by insisting on a new motherboard.

Dual core is starting to struggle a bit too nowadays, however much it's overclocked :(

Do not listen to the people recommending i3s. Get an 8320 and overclock it. Arma3 engine will receive better threading, and all of Bohemia's games going forward are supposedly going to be heavily threaded. We're also at the dawn of Vulkan and DX12 which will be very heavily multi-threaded.
