Have you considered selling your old stuff and going i7, you would need to invest a little more but it would make it more upgradable in the future. If not a Q95xx or above should do.

I know mobos over 28 days old, no you do not need the orginal packaging and the bundle that came with it. but CPUs, GPUs etc need everything when RMAing that was my understanding. anybody wanna correct me ? If I m wrong, that was MY understanding.

as for selling, yeah I could do, but I might as well build new computer. which I don't have the funds for at this minute in time

the e0 stepping q9550's are great, i just got mine like 2 weeks ago off ocuk. Im clocked to 3.6ghz with only 1.15 volts for everyday use and temps are great at that low 20's idle and 40 degrees max load under prime 95 torture test. All on air as im not too confident with water in my PC.

I got a QX9650 in the MM in you budget and very happy i am with it, often faster than i7 in games and much more cost effective compared to a complete i7 overhaul.

Don't get me started, I've just left Uni and I'm paying the price for my drinking now with cramps where my liver is....

Anyway, as for a cpu, as you had a Q6600, I'm guessing you don't want a new motherboard. So I won't suggest core i7. One of the Q9550 or the newer 45nm quads should do nicely. Are you gonna watercool it? Are you intending on overclocking it?

I've got the Q9550 and its a good CPU. A good upgrade from the Q6600 for me personally.

But if i were in the same position and had to shell out £250+ cash then I would just go all out sell of all my old components and go completely I7.

Yes it will probably hurt your wallet a little but you'll have a system capable of some fine things and last a long time longer before the next upgrade.

no its not water cooled, i m just going to buy a decent air cooler, like I did for my Q6600 and got some good results from it (3.8Ghz but I pulled it down to 3.62Ghz due to the temps xD) I broke that cooler sort off. as for I7 I would rather wait till I have a 10x better job to what I do now, at this point intel should have lunched the 32nm onces, which I m waiting for

I was going to go to uni, but my college, couldn't give the resroces for it, so I quit. so I m going specalised coruses instead, when I get the finiances sorted -.-

I've never understood why you have to keep the original packaging incase you have to RMA a product. You don't have to keep a TV's packaging to send it back, so why is it different for computer components?

Is it a way for he companies to avoid giving a replacement or something?
What do trading standard say about it?

I don't know myself, I m only going by what hte RMA thing states if you requst a RMA. you don't for mobos over 28 days old, cos it will ONLY be sent the manufactor who made it, depending on what is wrong with it etc. but for everything else needs the box inc mobos that ARE UNDER 28 days old. any E-COMMERCE site that I use has that policy, so it must be the manufactors, of the product.
