Hi, i was on before asking about what motherboard to unlock 4 cores on my phenom II x2 processor. I was reccomended this by amdy mk3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...03&subcat=1481 I was going to buy one but was just checking the supported cpu and it says on the asus website "AMD AM3+ FX™/Phenom™ II/Athlon™ II/Sempron™ 100 Series Processors
Supports CPU up to 95 W
AMD Cool 'n' Quiet™ Technology
* 32nm AM3+ CPU is supported by BIOS version 0401 and later" So I used Amd overclock facility to identify my cpu which comes up as AM2+ (940), but when i checked with cpuz it said AM3 (938). I checked the name and it is a Callisto if it helps. Could someone help identify if this is compatible with the mentioned mobo. Thanks again.
 
Apart from the fact that your link doesn't work, yes that motherboard should support your CPU.

That said, buying a motherboard to upgrade your CPU on the off chance the cores will unlock is more than a little stupid.
 
Tell me more, I understood that the black edition cpu's had dormant cores on them. Also just for verification the mb is Asus M5A78L-M LX AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3. I also read that the foxconn mb that is currently fitted is a lot of guff anyway?
 
If a core is disabled, there's no guarantee it'll work. Some people get all four cores perfectly stable at high speed, other people get stuck with a duffer that won't unlock and overheats like a madman if you try to push it more than a couple hundred mhz.

Foxconns are pretty awful, but bear in mind that you're paying £50 for the possibility of being able to use 4 cores - if your processor will unlock, you don't need extra cooling, and your motherboard can cope - when for £84 you could get an X4 640 with a solid guarantee.
 
okay, im listening... So, if i were to get the x4 would the current motherboard support it or would i need to change that anyway to perhaps the one mentioned? Also the ram fitted is ddr2 400mhz, would that need replaced too with a new cpu? Also the cpu is currently water cooled and i feel like its a bit of a waste on the current setup so i dont think cooling would be an issue for now. I read that the motherboard i was looking at had a built in tool for unlocking the cores so i assume it would handle it?
