What desktop CPU is this comparable to?

I have a gaming notebook with a 2860QM which is fairly similar in performance to the 3820QM. If you look at standard benchmarks like passmark the pair of these are around 25 and 35% better in performance (respectively) compared to a stock i7 860. Overclocked of course the 860 may surpass them but I haven't seen any such tests.

The trouble with the mobile chips is the vast majority are locked so no overclocking. The 2920 or 2960XM are in my opinion very good value now and are unlocked although still very expensive. Ivy and Haswell unlocked mobile i7s are obscenely expensive. Your cooling needs to be great to avoid throttling. I use a custom fanned notepal U3 with serious airflow for FSB overclocking on my 2860QM (multiplier locked). There are folks out there running 2920XMs at 4.5GHz 24/7 with proper setups. Pretty much desktop performance at those levels.

I'm not overclocking my laptop cpu!

I lied, my cpu is a 3740QM. 2.7GHz turbo to 3.7GHz (apparently- i've only seen 3.4). I've actually disabled the turbo for my oblivion gaming so i have more "thermal room" to overclock my GPU.

It's interesting to know it is similar to an i5 2500!
