Hi,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. It doesn't work basically so I want to salvage all the data of the hard drive. This came out easily enough.

What kind of adapter do I need so I can plug it into another computer, like an external HDD sort of thing via USB. Alternatively I could put it in another Inspiron laptop if I had one spare.

Thanks,

Forgot to mention: its 60gb IDE

Google "Plexus USB to IDE & SATA Adapter", which is what you need. I have one and it works fine. OCUK Don't stock anything that'll do the job unfortunately.

You will need to remove the connector on the back off the drive it just pulls off and then you will see the normal ide 2.5 connection

Please do this first though or it'll be no use. The drive is in a small caddy, usually held in by four screws (two on each side). Undo them, lift out the drive, then pull the black adapter with pins off the connections of the hard disk and it should reveal the 2.5 IDE connection. Power also goes over this, there is no separate connection for that.

Ah ok thx, that would explain the 4 exposed gold pins that don't seem to connect to anything. They musta been for the power. Clever stuff.
