Hello all,

I know you're probably sick of all the What do i do, Spec me, Help me etc threads, but just wondering;

When you all finished 6th Form/College or whatever it was that you did, did you take a gap year, go straight to uni or not go to uni at all?

Reason for asking this, is that i finish my last year at 6th form next May and recently begun to think about not going to Uni. Not sure why, just wanting some advice and what you all did when you finished.

Options so far is to take a gap year and take a break in New Zealand, or to not go to uni.

Im trying to decide whether i get a qualification/degree on the job and not go to uni, or to take a gap year and go to uni afterwards.

So yeah, what would you do if you were in my position?

Take a gap year to decide.
Take a gap year and go to Uni.
Go straight to Uni.
Get qualification/degree on the job.

Any other help/advice you can give?

Sorry for another Advice thread.

*awaits usual decide for yourself etc posts*

Im just wanting to get some clearance/ideas of what to do and what others did.

Thankyou whoever has any input.

ROFL, havent played mohaa for probably 2 years now. Those were the days.

Any reasons for going straight to Uni?

Reason im a bit iffy is i will want to study Accounting & Finance, whereas i can do it on the job & get paid full time.

Hmm.

Would you really be interested in that? Not just asking because it sounds boring to me, but because you really should choose something primarily based upon your interest in it (you probably know this, there are a few who don't though).

I went straight in to a foundation course due to totally screwing up my A Levels and managed to screw this up too! So now I'm trying to impress the leader of the course I want to get on to next year.

I took my 2:1 BSc (Hons) and promptly spent four weeks in a hospital bed trying to cop off with the nurses! Although this did happen way back in 1995, so it's not exactly relevant today.

if you're happy to start slaving away in a job then dont go to uni...if on the other hand you want to be doing hardly any work, sleeping and waking whenever you want, generally doing whatever comes to mind and taking it easy for a few years, go to uni :)

I'm going straight to Uni too as I like the Student lifestyle kinda like school for me parents still pay for everything. :p

Just gotta finish college!

LMAO I don't know what course you are doing mate but uni is only like that if your doing a course in flower arranging. I am studying Mechanical Engineering and was in 5 days a week last year, some days 9 am till 4 pm. If you are going to go to uni then I recommend that you do not take a gap year, just get the degree over with. You get to a point where you no longer want to be involved in education, I have just finished my first year of my degree and know that in 2 years I will have definitely have had enough of education.

First year of uni is pretty straight forward for most. Second year / Third year is when it becomes a large part of your time. I'm heading into my 2nd year and I think I'm gonna get a shock

Yeh I agree with this, I have just finished my first year and am dreading the amount of work I will have to endure during my second year. I have spoken to many people in the year above me and they have all confirmed that it is the second year where the work load starts to kick in.

If you want a decent career in an accountancy and finance, Uni will be worthwhile for you. It's one of those fields where having a degree still makes a different - qualifications are VERY important in accountancy. You CAN do it without, but you will get further, quicker, with a good degree and a good degree also opens doors at the large accountancy firms.

It can get proper boring, though.

Go to uni straight away, or have a 1 year break and then go to uni. Seriously, uni is awesome craic and totally worth it. Hell I'm thinking about starting another degree.

- GAP YEAR: Work in an accountancy firm doing whatever for a few months. That will help you decide if you would like to work or play at uni!
Then go traveklling round the world and have the best time of your life. YOU MUST GO - it is amazing most fun i've ever and think i will ever have.

- UNI. Yes you can train on the job, but the big 4 (deloitte, KPMG, E&Y, PWC) will all prefer a degree and it may hinder you later in your career when it comes to moving up the ladder.

Also UNI IS FUN a chance to grow up, get out of your parents house, and become a bit more independent.

Yes you can go and start a job straight away and maybe you can do as well but there is NO WAY you'll have as many experiences or as much fun.

Hmm.

What sort of A level results are you expecting?

I tend to go along the thought of if you can get the results to put yourself into a good university, for something like accounting and finance (consider Warwick for this, unsure on entry reqs but great uni and very well regarded accufin course), this would definately benefit you in the long run - without doubt.

I originally went to UWE Bristol, but then decided after 2 weeks i needed a gap year and i wasnt happy having to live in a house in my first year (got in on clearing, so no halls spaces left)

Whatever you do, make sure you get in halls, big mistake not to, in my opinion.

After having worked at Virgin Megastores for a year to get some money together, i decided upon a course at the University of Portsmouth in some great halls, made lots of friends because of it and now 3 years on from that im waiting on my final coursework mark, having got 68% for my dissertation :)

The gap year helped me to recharge my academic batteries a bit and grow up a bit too, it really helped me out, i recommend it to anyone. :)

I'm going to uni in September and the reason why I'm going straight there is because it'll give me a chance to leave home and deal with things on my own and basically grow up as much as I can yet still be a right child and have fun.

If I didn't go to uni I'd regret it because myself personally I wouldn't get a worthwhile job, well I mean a small job like waitering or gardening or something like that; not aspirations that I can acheive with a university degree or experience. :)

Thanks for all the input.

Only reason im asking is, yes it probably is better to go to Uni, but i can get the same degree while being paid full time.

My A-Level results should be all A's bar 1 (B).

I agree with what you are all saying, its a chance to grow up, be more independent but the only reason im asking is, i can see myself not doing the 4 years.

Another thing i was thinking about, was doing a gap year and then going to uni for a year or so, get a part of the qualification then work for the rest of a degree on the job, the reason for this is that my dad (an accountant) has been told that it would be much easier to get into a bigger accountancy firm doing this.

However im still on the fence whether to go to uni for the 4 years and gain the expierience and lifestyle. However, i can see myself getting too used to the first year or so and not gradually improving.

Im pretty sure i will take a gap year though, could give me time to decide what i want to do too.

It depends all on what you want to do at uni, as I'd say half the courses you can do now won't get you a job at the end.

If you do a year out you'll see what having money is like and never go uni!

All the above is true and is what has happened to my friends.

Do a good degree (as in one thats actually got a use in the real world) at a good uni and its well worth going!
hope this helps :p
