I've seen a lot of comments in threads from people saying they are looking forward to a new iPhone later this year. We've just had an announcement of various new software features in iPhone 3.0 but I'm interested in what people think about the actual hardware.

So here's a simple and straightforward question, what new hardware would you like to see in a new iPhone?

The most obvious is a better camera, but what else? What hardware would make you think "I need to upgrade my current iPhone NOW!"?

I'll start us off, then.

I'd like to see a storage bump to 32GB, and a better camera (with flash).

Mostly everything I wanted was addressed in 3.0 :)

I'd like to see it shipped with a decent set of IEMs/headset which match the colour of the iPhone.

Wasn't impressed with the earphones which came with my iPhone and the fact that I bought a black iPhone and got white earphones was a bit annoying.

Currently using a set of Sennheiser MM50s which are very nice and work as a full headset as well :)

A2DP, bluetooth file transfer - so better bluetooth hardware again.
MMS, landscape keyboard in SMS mode - software but certainly something I reckon they should incorporate. Mainly for me - better reception! :)

wow you are behind the times........... also the suggestions you have made are software and not hardware and this has clearly been addressed in 3.0

Meh, that's why I said software.

So does the hardware on the current iPhone support A2DP?

Yes, it's being introduced with the 3.0 software which doesn't require a hardware upgrade on the current model iPhone.

Realistic:
- 32GB flash
- 3.2MP camera with auto-focus
- Cortex A8 CPU
- 256MB RAM
- 7.2Mbps quad-band HSDPA

Less realistic:
- 640x960 screen
- 64GB flash
- 5MP camera with auto-focus and LED flash

Fantasy:
- 8MP camera with auto-focus and Xenon flash
- VGA video recording
- Slide-out keyboard model

In line with the new mac lines, I'd expect a 25% price bump too.

My problem with a slide out keyboard is that it would dramatically increase the thickness of the device, and if it didn't then it would knacker battery life because the battery would have to be much smaller.

i wouldnt want a slide out keyboard. to me the iphone is all about the touchscreen, IMO a slide out keyboard would ruining everyting that the iphone was / is.

Quoted for truth.

Don't like touchscreen keyboards? Bog off! :D

Better camera would be nice, but my biggest problem with my iPhone is the lag. Not sure whether it needs a faster CPU, more RAM or both. I read that the CPU is underclocked, so maybe that's something that would be software modifiable, although at the expense of battery life?

Improved camera AF + flash.
That is all it physically needs. Storage bump to 32gig sure.
I don't like the fact the 3G one is curved either. Its annoying when you want to play a game flat on a surface or just text.
I don't like the plastic back either. I know metal was gonna mess with gps/3g but why not make it like the SE K800i back. It was a nice material feel.

Exactly matches my opinion, the best upgrade from my point of view would be a performance boost. Then a better camera (though flash I care less about, the SE C905 aside I've yet to see a phone which can take decent pictures in the dark anyway). Then the upgrade to 32GB (which is a given pretty much). Then better battery life, mine is still dead after a day of decent use...

More memory, 32GB, 64GB would be a dream. Mean I can use just the iPhone instead of iPod and iPhone.

Not too bothered about the camera, I have a digital camera for that. Maybe a slight improvement so that it can actually take proper photos in low light.

That's about it really.

Yeah better performance and a better (or at least no worse) battery life would be great even if it meant a 'slight' increase in thickness.

Secondary upgrade for me would be a slightly better camera.

32gb would be simply great though.

Would also like to be able to synch wirelessly (not sure if that is hardware or software related though).
