I kind of wish I had kept my parts as a server, but I don't think I would ever use it because my housemates would probably complain about the electricity bills

what version of linux, can you provide a d/l link

One of the server links, depending on your CPU for an easy introduction to linux.

or

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/damnsmall/current/?fl=

current ISO.

For a lightweight one.

or
ftp://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current

pick your CPU, then CD/DVD 1 is the OS, the rest are add-on packages that are available for download from the apt-get command on the command line, or via the graphical package manager :)

Debian is a very stable OS. Ubuntu is bells and whistles, all three of the ones I suggested have good forum support, Ubuntu is most likely has the largest and is the one that Dell provide with some of their computers.

There are many other options; http://distrowatch.com/ has the most popular listed in the right hand column :)

I'm giving my old pc to a friend who's going back to uni. It's not like I need it for anything useful that isn't simply trying to find a job for it.
