What do I need to do to remote desktop to my machine at home?

I was looking into this a while back but I don't want to leave my pc on all day at home. So I researched if my Sky Sagem router could send the magic Wake-on-LAN packet which it can't Just seems pointless to me now but I would love to have this option.
