Hi, the house im currently living in is rented, im currently using one of those naff mobile dongle broadbands, slow and crap > but handy on the move.

Anyway, the house has a BT socket thing on the wall, but here come the noob questions :o

-> I was thinking of getting Virgin Broadband, does a phoneline mean i need to have a house phone, or is it the box on the wall i need?

-> Do i need to pay any charges to bt etc for installation?

-> was only looking to pay £15-£20pcm, dont need huge amount of downloads, 10gb upwards is enough.

sorry, not so savvy in this area :(

Thanks

You need to have an active phone line for ADSL Broadband. There will be an activation fee (you'd have to ask for exact costs) and then a line rental fee per month. I believe there are a few other companies, other than BT that will connect you up, in addition to your broadband - so see what you can find out.

PlusNet are a pretty good budget ISP, and provide a pretty good service. If you have Sky TV, and Sky LLU services are available in your area then they may be worth looking at. Try SamKnows - http://www.samknows.com for information on whats available in your area.

If the phone hasn't been connected for 6 months or more (might be less now) BT will likely charge you £125 for the prvilige of having it reconnected.

Your line rental will be around £10 a month so take that into consideration when budgeting for your service.

As mentioned above (and in the stick) check to see what services may be available in your area from the LLU providers, Be/O2 are pretty good value for money here, as also mentioned Sky's service is generally OK but will require you to take up a TV package too.

Avoid Virgin ADSL, AOL, TalkTalk, Orange etc. like the plague as they generally have a poor track record, and also many of them now require 18 month contracts, something to bear in mind if you may be moving inside that time.

If no LLU services cover your exchange Zen do 25Gb for £25/month, a bit over budget but a very high quality service.

its been at least 16 months that i know of before it was used, maybe longer, £125  :(

i dont mind paying £25 month, as long as i dont pay daft install fees like that.

i would phone bt for a reconnection charge cost or if you can get cable this could be a lot cheaper to do than bt!

TBH there is very little you can do about the reconnection fee, I've got it waived before but it took a lot of effort, they used to run an offer where it was waived if you signed an 18 month contract and would be liable to pay if you terminated it early but I think that may have stopped now.

Basically you're going to be looking at:

£125 Reconnection fee
£11.25 / month is the cheapest line rental BT offer
+
£ISP costs, so Zen @ £25/month would make your total monthly bill £36.25

ok cheers, gonna have a look out for some deals then see if i can get past that reconnection fee.

18 month contract on the line would probably be your best bet, or see if someone like the Post Office could sort you out.

Personally I'd avoid doing a bundle deal with BT for your Phone/Broadband as just looking through the recent posts in the last couple of weeks on here would suggest BT as an ISP are far from good. IMO it is worth trying to pay that little bit extra for a good ISP as it's less of a headache.
