Hi all.

I'm thinking about getting a PSP. Just wanted to get a quick overview of what everyone thinks of the PSP. I like the idea of it... games machine, MP3 player, movie player, WIFI internet, etc... but am a little unsure.

Any advice or opnions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Paul

I bought mine, took it on holiday with Lost S1 on it, watched lost, played the 2 games I had, sold it.

I think its overrated.

If you get the bus or train a lot then go for it.

I think most people tend to think that the DS has 'better' games. I'm one of them.

Good machine, but let down by Sony's incompetance.

In making a portable PS2, they've basically made a machine that no PS2 owner actually wants, because they can get the same games cheaper for the PS2.

Very little innovation in titles, usually just straight ports of PS2 games.

However very good movie player, great for travel if you do a lot of it. Once some better games come out i'd probably recommend it a lot more, however as it is now its just a machine that not many people really play.

Edit* I've put off selling mine purely on the hope that the PS1 emulator coming out will have FFVII available as a launch title.

Its a great games console however as with any games console its the games that make it.

If you like some of the lineup on the PSP or perfer its lineup to that of the DS then go for the PSP if its the reverse then go for the DS.

As for using the PSP as a media machine well its too big to use a MP3 player but decent enough at video playback (although the UMD's are costly), the web browser although decent enough isn't really good enough for proper internet use.

It is perfect for me for the following reasons:

1. I travel a lot so helps pass the time
2. I don't have a PS2 so nearly every game i have i have not played before on a PS2
3. It can be hacked/fiddled with for various fun uses

I don't watch movies at all, or use it for mp3 as i have an iPod and portable DVD player for these

I think the games are poor and you will get better video playback from an iRiver or such.

However, if the games ARE for you, then go for it.

Got one the end of last week, and all I can really say is Liberty City Stories ;)

I'm not entirely sure if this contravenes the competitiors rule or not, please delete if so (OCUK don't sell them, but they do other types of flash memory, and I don't want a link etc.)-
What approximate price should I be paying for a genuine 1gb Memory Stick Pro Duo please?
No links or anything else; I can just find wildly varying prices, and I need to know the approx price I should be paying for a proper branded variant.

First person who sees, please RTM for a proper opinion :)

Cheers

Totally overrated, go ahead and get one though as you'll always want one as i did, first couple of months its the dogs then after that you realize the many flaws it has;

1. Poor Battery (didn't think this would annoy be, but after i got my DS Lite with its seemingly never ending battery life it does)

2. UMD, nuff said, Universal Media Disc, hmmm Universal aye? Only one machine can play it? They really need to create a Burner for a pc to really make use of it!

3. Games, awful, just ported down from its bigger brother the PS2, the only game that is an innovation on it is Loco Roco, GTA was OK but frame rate issues for me made it unplayable.

4. Screen, while at first glance its awesome you soon realize how bad it is, Ghosting on it is terrible especially enhanced in GTA:LCS with its trails. The Jaggies on it mean you have to hold the machine at arms length to make it look any good, may be over exaggerating but it annoys me.

5. DS, the DS Lite is better imo, if want a games machine go for the DS if you want movies get a dedicated portable player.

The PSP while good is a bit lack luster, seems like sony have taken tips from EA in creating it, brand loyalty seeing them through.

EDIT : Anyone see the Vice City Stories advert on TV, don't think it'll look as crisp as that on the screen.

I considered buying one to take on holiday, but once I discounted the GTA games, there were none that I wanted to play. All the games seemed like PS2 re-hashes.

Then I bought a DS Lite and I couldn't be happier. Much better game selection, and the touchscreen stuff is superb fun :D

Im going to put a slightly different slant on it to what others have. I think its frankly pretty astounding that you can have something with roughly the power of a PS2 in your hands. While others say it just does the same old things as on PS2, where is the real problem with that. Can you play your PS2 while on the bus ? It is a Playstation Portable afterall, so it shouldnt really be a suprise that there are many old favourates in its game line up ... Its nowhere near perfect as has been mentioned, battery life is poor, screen could have been more responsive and actually usable in strong light. Its really not a bad machine and if you really liked the PS2 and you want to play similar games on the move its a great machine.

The DS is far more pick up and play and has more original titles mainly due to the stylus and touch screen. Battery life is much better and the screen is actually usable in strongish light.

Just for the record, i actually have them both. Cant really say which i prefer, although i use neither as often as i should.

I've got one on it's way to me soon. I'm getting it because I commute for a couple of hours a day and the DS just can't hold my attention for that ammount of time. I have an iPod for music and whatnot, the PSP is purely there as a portable PS2. Rehashes are fine for me as I never get to play on my PS2 anyways.

I hope thist post hasn't made sound like I have tonnes of disposable income, I really don't!

at what it does its excellent. Its movie playing (i used to convert DVDs to h.264(?) and run them from the mem card - no need to use UMD, and it helps the battery life.

Games were ok, PS2 games basically. Ended up selling it to fund the purchase of a 360 - just didnt ever travel anywhere that i could use it.

DS is fun, have one of these too, kept it as its worth less resale, and whilst initially it was awesome, i've tired of that too, andnever play it either (but again thats more because i always drive everywhere)

The sandisk brand is better than sony, as many of the sony branded ones are fake knock-offs from china.

I personally wouldn't pay more than £15-25 for a 1GB stick, you can get a 2GB stick for around £30-35 nowdays.

Ive had mine for over a year now and tbh i hardly use it either for games or movies etc. I was addicted to it when i first got it but now im just plain bored of it so its sitting in a corner gathering dust. Problem is that mines an american version so hard to sell, ill probably give it to my cousin or something.

Its not hard to sell at all i sold my american one for £210 two months ago :D

Had mine a year now and absolutely love it, fantastic piece of kit that gets used almost daily.

As others have said yes it does have a lot of similar titles to the PS2 but as I don't own one of them it just means lots of games I've never played.

I mainly use it for games but occasionally use it for the odd movie/tv programme.

As for the comments about poor battery life and loading times there are things that can be done to easily give 10+ hours’ play and speed up loads a substantial amount, but these can’t be discussed here. ;)

love my psp !!

wouldn't be without one now

it is my mp3/mp4 player and sometimes my portable data storage (2gb stick)

on top of that, theres some great games on it too

and with vice city stories out in 2 days, it just gets better

i also owned a ds, had it about 2 months then i sold it coz it bored me, i'm just
not into those quirky sorta games. give me splinter cell, socom, gta etc any day

had my psp since well before uk launch :D

dont let people put you off ,the psp is a fantastic handheld machine, ten times better than the underpowered ds which i aslo have, like yourself i wanted mp3 and movie support alongside the games
the psp does not dissapoint.games to look out for are
wipeout
everybodys golf
tekken
streetfighter alpha
locoroco
ultimate ghost & goblins
burnout legends
outrun 2006
mercury
lumines
exit
worms
lemmings
using the neuros mpeg recorder i can also watch tv programs on the train ,try doing that on the ds

That pretty much sums it up for me. Good ideas, but poorly implemented imo. My mates got one, he's watched a couple of over priced UMD movies on it, never used it as an mp3 player and has only played Ridge Racer for any decent amount of time on it. Bit of a shame really.
