What Do We Really Think Of The PSP?

IMO the PSP is still the best handheld console to date, yes the games have been lacking but as a full media solution its numero uno. Away on trips its an absolute must have :)

The psp is the jack of all trades but master of none.

Very poor battery life and all the loading the unit has to do just to get into a game just doesn’t give it the pick up and play that a hand held should have.

lusing the neuros mpeg recorder i can also watch tv programs on the train ,try doing that on the ds

You can do that on the DS. Moonshell =video's , mp3 , image viewer etc.

Not used a psp , so no comment on it , but ds will play back media files fine.

I have had one since US launch. Although I go through phases where I dont use it for games as much, you do that with most handhelds. It gets used daily as an mp3 player, 2gb of storage if needed for files and Lumines every few days. I think it will seriously come into its own once PS3 comes out. You will be able to download ps1 games, kinda like XBLA. Also the LocationFree player functionality. You will be able to playback any content on your home PS3 over the internet using the PSPs wifi.

But as I'm already mentioned both of those short comings can be fixed.

ive got both, ive had a psp about 8 months longer thana ds.

and to be honest i have stopped usng my psp, i have played a lot of games for it and some of them are excellent, like GTA, syphon filter, burnout and others.

i also used it all the time on the trains as a movie player. i never bought a umd film because i put dvds on the psp instead.

now i have a ds with 3 games. super mario world (which iv completed some im bit bored of it)
pheonix wright which i love but i am at the end of it aswell
the last is mario kart which is ok in 1 player but excellent in multiplayer.

as soon as im done with pheonix wright i think i will end up getting a new psp game and play that. Gta for example.

there needs to be better games for psp, then it will kill the ds, the games dont have enough longitivity in them. complete once no need for anything else.

Depends what you want really. I use mine for video files on the train, emulation and scummvm as much as i use it for psp games. It's got some nice rpgs and some great racers. Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racer were the main reason i bought this machine, add Initial D Street Stage to the mix and i'm a happy chappy.

Is it worth all that money just for the games? Probably not in my opinion.

Edit* I've put off selling mine purely on the hope that the PS1 emulator coming out will have FFVII available as a launch title.

Story on IGN about 10 days ago, stating the PS1 Games would be downloaded through the new PS3 Online Store, which means you'll need that piece of hardware to put the games on the PSP.

Still on their PSP pages if anyone is interested. Can't see it posted here either.

Sorry to go off-topic.

I think they're releasing some PC software too.

Digging around I've found this...

Update -- 10/20/2006: Speaking to SCE Marketing Vice President Peter Dille, GameDaily BIZ was able to confirm that a "PSP downloads site" was up and running to distribute PSP games without the use of PS3, although this stops short of confirming that the full PlayStation Store will be on PSP as soon as the next PSP update releases.

So I guess it's one of these things that come out in the next few weeks. Oops might be a case of...'move on, nothing to see here'...

Thanks for the comments... I can see all the points that have been made, and can understand the logic.

I will end up getting one, I think! I like the thought of sticking Fawlty Towers on the memory stick, while being able to listen to music and play Football Manager 2007!

The whole WIFI thing interests me. I seldom surf the net these days, and usually only go online to buy stuff, read this excellent forum, and check the football results... all I think the PSP would be able to manage (perhaps not the buying stuff online).

Eitherway, It's currently the only thing on the market that can do all this... so it looks like another one will be leaving shelves!

Thanks again for all the input.

Paul
