What do you consider a Hipster?

Surely a hipster is a nerd that is just trying (and most likely failing) to be fashionable at the same time, so they are just being hypocritical.

No no, hipsters are wanna be nerds. Apart from their definition of a nerd is about 20 years out of date.
At my college there are a lot of hipsters, quite easy to spot as it's usually a stripy shirt with top button done up with a baseball hat with the original sticker still on.
I don't care that much, the only thing that slightly annoys me is that they don't usually try that hard in class and usually do arty courses.

I'm 22, so I should probably know these things but... What are 'runners'? I thought that they are a long, thin length of a carpet that goes through a room. Do you wear carpet? If you do, then I'm not sure if you are a hipster or not but you are an idiot.
