What do you do to unwind?

I've been getting migraine headaches recently and upon visiting three doctors for three different opinions, I'm apparently suffering from a lot of stress. To be honest, I don't feel stressed unless I'm at work but the docs reckon that I'm not aware of the signs and to be fair, the three of them said the exact same thing. I've been strongly advised that in the interests of my health I should find an effective way of releasing stress.

I used to go to the gym quite regularly but since moving house last month I haven't got round to signing up for one. I still get some exercise in the form of walking and cycling but it just doesn't seem to cut it, I need something more extreme; or do I need something more sedate, or both? I don't know and I'm willing to try anything.

What do you do to calm down after a hectic day at work? Do you do something relaxing or do you play hard to let all that pressure out? What do you find most effective?

EDIT: FFS I did it again, I posted a GD bound thread in motors AARRGGHH :o

I like just sitting in the garden at night, unless you live on a busy road or whatever. Its great to sit there at about half ten eleven when its nice and cool without being cold, and everything is quiet and lush.

Failing that a good match of football with some shoulder barging.

I suffer a lot from stress and, as unhealthy as it undoubtedly is, I find alcohol (not to excess) and a good DVD to be a very good cure.

Perhaps you could take up a contact sport?

Do you have a girfriend? ;)

A lot of people (yes, even young heterosexual males) tell me that meditation is useful.

HTH, probably doesn't :p

Scaring my self ****less on my bike usually does it for me. Glentress black run and stuff not just cycling round a lake. A nice bottle of alcohol and a movie also works.

I used to do weights when I was stressed which kinda helped. I dont do that any more for some reason, I just stopped. Now it has been brought to my attention I might start again...

I dont have any effective method at the moment - I bought my 360 thinking it would help but it hasnt really, I get just as wound up because its yet another thing to try and achieve perfection in. Photography is a great way to get me out and about which sort of helps but it just doesnt hit the spot...

I guess driving is my only real way of de-stressing. Going out for a hoon is always a great laugh :D

Scuzi, I work in a high stress and pressure environment and it's vital to unwind.

I do this by walking, reading, listening to classical music, biking and driving.

There is loads to do but the best is a reaaly good workout where you are simply too tired to worry.

I like that idea but the neighbors would think I'm crazy. It’s ok thought if they ask I'll just say I'm working on my tan to re-assure them.

Recently I've been playing various musical instruments, though mainly guitar as loud as I can to unwind, it works wonders. Singing does too.. I can't do it well at all, but trying is a great way to relieve any stress :D

I suffer stress a lot, and personally i do the following:

1. go down the gym, I mainly swim but I know people who say hitting a punch bag can be very relaxing.

2. Have a bash with my mates at fight night on the xbox 360, something about getting the agression out on it that hits the spot.

3. meditation. I was pretty sceptical about this (thought it was all new age and stuff), but I can honestly say that despite what I thought before i've found it very good for teaching strategies for relaxing. Personally I was recommended the following book:

full catastrophe living by john kabat-zinn.
