What do you do when you hit a gaming rut?

After a great run smashing through PS4 exclusives, TW3 on PC and a few other things, I seem to have hit a rut and just can't get interested in new games at the moment. The last things I completed and really enjoyed were Detroit: Become Human on PS4, Divinity: Original Sin 2 on PC and a more recently a replay of Super Mario World on SNES.

Since then I've dabbled in City of Heroes for nostalgia, tried Far Cry 5, RDR2, Risk of Rain 2 (which was fun for a bit) and some others but eventually got bored. I tried Shadow of the Colossus last night and found it frustrating so gave up after a few hours.

Does anyone else hit this and how do you get through it? I was going to build a new PC for Cyberpunk but now I think I'll hold off. I wonder if pressures of work and my scatty thoughts are just not letting my brain switch into gaming mode or something. I can open up Steam, stare at my library for half an hour then just turn off the pooter. :/

I am in one right now. I am just doing other things like watching some series, painting my models, reading etc. It will come back I know, but for now I am just doing other things.

play online with friends. often the banter fun is better than the games. single player games i generally cant complete regardless as i get bored.

I really enjoyed Wildlands and Rocket League with mates actually, but they're all playing COD now which doesn't interest me. :p

Good to know I'm not alone. I do have other hobbies, thankfully :p

As above. Older you get the interest just withers. You feel like you need to game as you have enjoyed it in the past. Unfortunately you'll have to find sonethink else to do. Sad times.

I think sometimes you need to find new games. I find going back and forth between PC Game Pass and PS4/PS Now helps.

Agreed try something different or a slightly different/newer genre. Possible you just aren’t playing the right games for you.

Couple of my most favourite games of all time are DQ8, DQ11, BOTW and bioshock infinite. DQ11 put 100hrs+ into that game, struggled to put it down.

There have been many big games lots of people like that I simply haven’t got a long with. RDR2 I thought was amazing but not left a massive impression on me aside from the visuals, majority of that I guess is down to a retard ruining the ending before I had chance to play. Same with TW3, a great game but just seemed to drag a bit for me.

I only usually game a few hours at most per day depending on how interested I am in what I’m playing. I’m the kind of person that tends to play one game at a time. Story wise anyway.

And also very much agreed with others. Online play with friends messing around is always great fun.

I fall in and out of gaming every few months, usually when that happens I'll just go put more focus into one of my other hobbies for a bit...
I might do more writing, paint some miniatures, a bit of carpentry. I might spend a bit more time out walking and doing some photography, or I'll watch some programmes on Netflix or watch some streams.

If you've got other people around you, then board games are might be a good thing to switch to for a bit.

I have to admit, I am stunned that I've been gaming for 39 years and still haven't yet had a gaming rut. There's always something for me to play that I am excited for , in fact most often the case is that theres too much for me to play that I'm excited for :)

Most games don't interest me anymore, especially fast FPS type games like Doom and Wolfenstein.

I'll still get taken in by a good RPG like Fallout, Elder Scrolls etc and future iterations of these still excite me.

Mostly I find myself playing slower empire managers/builders. Total War, Universim, X4 Foundations etc.

I do miss the old titles like the Jedi Knight series and Starfleet Command games.

I find my gaming rut always comes in the summer. Feel guilty wasting away at my desk when it’s glorious outside. In the summer BBQ’s, Cider and rides bicycle/motorcycle all win over gaming

I really do like something I can get immersed in. Fallout 3 + NV, Morrowind, Skyrim and TW3 are some of my most favourite games ever. :D

I wish they would remaster KOTOR because that is something I could definitely get back into. I've played KOTOR 1 & 2 several times now though. I could try yet another playthrough of ME I suppose but it feels too soon. :p

If your in a rut then I don't think it matters what game you try as it won't help. Just lay off for a bit and you will soon want to get back into it. Maybe try the multitude of indie games on steam as many of them are very good and provide a different gaming experience to many AAA titles.

I myself have just built a new gaming rig and loving every minute of it so far.
