I have been kicking around the idea of upgrading my video card. I have run AM3 and I see a huge score difference between my CPU and GPU. I would like to make my GPU be more on terms with my CPU.

My current setup:

A64 3200+ 939 @ 2.1ghz 1.4V stock cooling
ASUS A8N-E
1024MB PC3200 Corsair value RAM
Gigabyte 6600GT 128mb cooled by a Zalman VF700-cu
(The stock cooler just sucked!)
Sound blaster 2 audigy value
80GB+120GB Seagate Barracuda SATA HDDs
Windows XP pro 32bit

I have been asking and a lot of people have said that I should go for a 7800GT. But I am not really all that keen on spending $300us on a video card. I have thought about possibly going for ther eVGA overclocked 6800GS, and also picking up a 2GB ram kit. Agian I dunno. The Primary game I run are FS9, CFS2, and IL2 FB+AEP+PF.

If I were you i would go for the 6800GS and 2Gb of ram, unless you can stratch to the 7800GS ? Although is there any benchies of the 7800GS vs the 6800 series

I have a PCI-E board, there won't be a 7800GS in PCI-E format.

Thanks for the help guys. I decided to go with hte 6800GS. The Radeon looked nice. And the price was not bad at all. But I have just had some really bad experiances with useing ATI stuff. Maybe a next upgrade.

That was the wisest choice you could make to be honest; you can get at 6800GS in This Week Only for but £130 compared to the X850XT's £190 - I know which I'd choose!

X850's only £146, so id pay the extra £16 for the much faster card.

I stand corrected - thanks for pointing that one out! That really is a fantastic price.

However, From what I gather, 6800GS' aren't bad clockers. So whilst you may have a slightly less powerful card even when overclocked, you'll still have more features. Depending on your system, I'm sure you may well prefer the added features.

Take for example Far Cry. My X800 Pro (16 pipelines) plays it totally maxed out, utterly smoothly. Now, my card is probably around the same sort of power as a 6800GS at stock, but sometimes I really wish I could have HDR etc in Far Cry.

It may not do it for some people, but sometimes I'd rather have the improved IQ

Well It would have been interesting to see how my system, which uses Nvidia's N force 4 ultra chip set would have done with a radeon card. I have heard of conflicts though I could be totally wrong. But Either way I don't think I made a mistake going with eVGA's 6800GS super overclocked edition. Now Its no where near the X850XT's memory and core clock speeds, and the ATI card will trounce the 6800GS as far as benching goes.

But at 490 for the core and 1100 for the memory with added in SM3.0 I don't think its too much of a bad thing. Besides the card should perform as good, if not better then a standard 6800GT. I should see an increase when it comes to what my system will be able to handel as far as higher AF and AA setting and more eye candy from my sims, I'll probibly try experimenting with different water types in IL2 FB+AEP+PF. Thats exactly what I am looking for stability and strength, not an over all jump in FPS. Being on top oif the tech heap is great, but the problem is always trying to stay there. I'm content in finding good stuff which gives me what i'm looking for.
