What do you need to take infra red ...

The basic answer is, you need a camera(obviously), an IR filter (Such as a Hoya R72) and ideally a tripod, as IR can often need long exposures. It is possibly to fake the IR effect by using photoshop, but its a technique that has mixed results and ive not really used at all. And half the fun of IR is the process of setting up an taking the shots, and seeing how the world looks like in IR.

I say that is the basic answer, because some cameras are much bettr than others at capturing IR. Most cameras have something infront of the sensor called a 'hot filter' or 'hot mirror' which filters out UV and IR rays. (which can cause hazyness on normal shots) This in turn effects how long an exposure you will need. Unfurtunately the hot filter in my D40X is quite effective, so I need long exposure times (The shots in that long were about 5 minutes each), this is normally annoying, but not a great problem. However if your camera doesn't support such long exposure times, then you may have problem. Im just going to check out if you camera if ok for IR, so hang on 1 moment. :)

you didn't mention me or Fstop11?????

I'm shocked and disappointed :p

We all use DSLR's

for my shots I use a

Canon 350D
17-40L

and a H72 58mm filter bluetacked ontop of a 77mm UV filter so it screws straight onto the lens.

You could possible get a similar effect via what I would imagine would be A LOT of PP'ing but I have no idea what the end effect would be like.

When I take a shot these are the things I change

White Balance
Red/Blue colour channels
Hue/Saturation
Crop

Not sure what equipment you could get for the Fuji though, either way, good luck!!!

Thanks for your reply ... my camera does not have great range for long exposure times ... a few seconds at most.

It was MK's previous post which inspired my thread ... apologies Phate! ;)

I only have a Fuji S5600 and was wondering..

none of this "only".. the 5600 is a very good little camera for what it costs, and iirc does up to 15 second exposures (or might've been 30.. i didn't have my 5600 for very long).

this dude uses a 5600, although it has been modified in the same way that fstops camera has.

you aren't going to get photos like that without a similar modifcation though.

pickup a 55mm IR filter and go for a play, they're not too expensive.

Sorry to jump in but i have a quick question...
Am i right in saying the only thing i would need to buy is a Hoya Infra-Red Filter 58mm ( R72 ) ?

I have a 400D and i would like to try IR, but i didnt know if there were any more pieces of equipment needed. Also is 30 seconds enough shutter time to enable IR shots to be taken?

Cheers.

Yup, thats the filter you want. Or any other wratten 89b filter. Have you got a tripod? Since you will be using long expsures, a tripod is essential. You might be able to get it down to 30 seconds, but it will depend in the light conditions, and you might have to crank up the iso which will really affect noise levels. Why do you want to keep it under 30seconds? The 400D has a bulb setting doesn't it?

Unfortunately so. Same with my D40X (And also the D80 and D200 afaik). My shots in the other thread required 5 Minute exposure times at iso 200, f16. :(

I am looking into a tripod, at the moment all i have is a mini tripod which is very cheap and doesnt really fill me confidence.

I like the look of the Velbon CX540 and the CX440. Both look relatively simple and easy to use. I only want a bog standard tripod as it wouldnt get used a great deal.

I havent read up on bulb but yes it does have it. I havent used it yet.

Thanks for your help :)

As far as I know, Velbon make ok tripods. If you want something a bit sturdier, id look at the Manfrotto range. infact, even if you don't want a Manfrotto tripod, their site is still work a look, as they have a page that helps you decide what you want from a tripod and what head to get etc.

The bulb setting basically allows you to keep the shutter open for as long as you want. I use mine with a remote, so I press it once to start the exposure, and again to stop it. So in theory I can have an exposure as long as the battery lasts.
