What do you need to take infra red ...

Sounds good, i was looking at getting a remote also, simply because i love gadgets [/lee evans voice].

Theres the Canon RC-5 or the RC-1 which can be had for the same price. Any idea on what ones best ? The RC-5 looks better but the RC-1 has a 2 second timer. Normally the RC-5 is more expensive so i guess this will be the better out of the two.

What setup do you use for remote shutter ?
Thanks for your help by the way.

No problem. Ive got a Nikon, so I can't really comment on either of those remotes. the one I use works for both Nikon and Canon though, and was a 99 pence (+ something like £6 p&p, lol) one from Hong Kong via the bay. Its dead simple and does what I want it to do. Its got 2 buttons; 1 for the shutter release, and one for the inbuilt led torch.. bonus! :D

do the canons really struggle that much with IR?

No, but Nikons have better sensors for it. all my shots are shot at ISO100 exposure of 30seconds does it fine :)

Thanks for using my photos as an example for the S5600 above. The main advantage of a modified camera like that is that you can take infrared shots handheld because it's very sensitive. It's also very useful that you can use RAW files and alter the white balance afterwards in post-processing.

I think it's far easier to get good infrared shots with a point and shoot or bridge camera like the S5600 where you get a live preview on the LCD - I have tried on my DSLR and it's just too fiddly.

For the three years prior to me buying the modified camera, I did use an unmodified Canon Ixus camera - towards the end of that period, I was perching it on top of a Gorillapod SLR to keep it still.

Example from my Canon Ixus (with Hoya R72 strapped on to it):-

More of the older Ixus photos are here:-

It's always good to find other people interested in infrared :)

hehe, do you keep an eye on the referer urls on your page? i linked to you from the fiatforum and then you posted there too. i do like your work :)

not true actually. Its the resistance of the glass filter infront of your sensor otherwise known as the low pass filter. This reflexes back infrared radiation from reaching the sensor.

Although Nikons record infrared tones differently the sensors are just as sensitive to IR as much as Canons are. Which is why newer Nikons are less responsive to IR due to Nikon incorporating a new low pass filter into the newer line up.

Been busy with a local band in hope they will get a record deal. Been out all day and not coming home in the morning till 8am for the past 3 days.

Suppose to be doing it again tonight but I am shagged so I am playing it easy.

I've had good results with my Pentax K100D, KOOD R72 IR filter and 18-55mm kit lens:

Although I'm still learning the IR post processing work flow.
