Evening all just in bit of Dilema. Seen few posts people using the plex app on the samsung smart hub. When i get back from working away. Going to get things finally sorted with me network exc. But im not to sure what to use for the best i have android box with kodi and samsung tv that i could use the plex app. i like plex cause its easier to configure with folders music and movies. But kodi offers more with skins exc. i like the fanfart exc on kodi gives more info and trailers exc more eye candy

I used to use XBMC, now I use Plex. I find Plex better in just about every way. It's very simple to set up and the fact everything is stored on the server means it's much better for multiple users. I know you can get KODI to use MYSQL but it's no where near as seamless as Plex.

Plex because its simplicity encourages me to actually watch and enjoy things, where as with XBMC I was never satisfied with how it looked simply because I knew I could always change it for a new look so ended modding more than than watching.

A bit like Skyrim really! :D

I agree there plex is a lot easier to set up over the network then kodi is. But like you say you can swap and change to much with KODI

Plex is a server which you need on a PC or NAS. But there is 2 plex media players one is PLEX home theatre and the new PLEX media player. i have the home theatre on my pc and it looks great. I had the PLEX android app which i wasn't really keen on the TV. Only downside to the PLEX players there keyboard controlled and no mouse support or remote

Another vote for Plex here. I've got it running on an Amazon TV and a RaspberryPi. Works well, was easy to setup and maintain. The RaspberryPi sometimes struggles and buffers a bit with 1080p, but usually only a couple of times in the first few minutes of watching. I'm a fan of being able to stop watching in one room and continue in another, now looking to setup more on other TVs.

I finally moved over from XBMC, and I don't regret it at all. Plex also updates the library much quicker, and with it being server based once it's updated its available straight away on all devices.

I do have plex on my server however I only use it for lower bit rate TV.

Plex is excellent and works very well out of the box.

However my home theatre and main TV I use Kodi almost entirely for Image quality reasons, for higher bit rate stuff and the best audio Kodi is still well ahead. To get the best out of Kodi may take a little more work but for some of us getting the best is worth a little more effort.

I use Plex, but how does it differ from KODI in terms if quality/audio?

My KODI player could play 1080p/DTS, but so can Plex, I can't tell the difference between them.

I prefer Plex for it's looks/features over KODI.

I'm running Plex Home Theatre on a couple of Mac Minis and it works fine with the Apple remote. I think there is an option to turn on mouse support too ... there certainly used to be.

Personally I've been running Plex for a long time after not getting on with Kodi at all. 99% of the time it does just what I want it to do (although I'm not that happy with the new player software).

They're not replacements for each other though are they?

Kodi is designed for smart device/remote where plex is keyboard, kodis strength is in streaming whereas plex is an offline/server based player. They do different jobs.

I went back and forth.

Started with XBMC until my ATV2 died and I cba to jailbreak to get that working so went to Plex. Used that for 2 years, it's fine as long as I decode with my iMac, and when I switched it over to another iMac the online streaming part stopped working which I couldn't figure out why. It requires me to watch movie with my computer on.

Kodi is more resource hungry than Plex but on the new Amazon TV 4K it's fine. It runs everything and is prettier. Does take an hour or so to set up but I like how it updates library every time you boot up.

Kodi. Have Mysql running on my HP microserver with all my media. Kodi on Nvidia Shield, AFTV, AFTV stick and various tablets and phones. Sab and Sonarr on the server too and watchdog running on the Kodi session on the Shield so it updates the library twice a day.

i switch between them

ive got a m8s with kodi on and when it works it works well but it doesnt always work. i tend to have to pull the power out of the back fairly frequent due to freezes etc.

plex works well depending on the file i throw at it, ive got the plex server running on my n40l which seems to struggle with transcoding quite frequently.

im trying to streamline this by re-encoding my films to mp4/aac so i can direct play from almost anything i have plex installed on.

i think once ive done this i will go back to using plex.

I'm running Plex on several roku boxes and they work beautifully. Also got it running on my phone and tablet (both android and again it works perfectly.

Huh?

What do you mean by this? I use Plex on all sorts of devices and don't have to touch a keyboard on any of them.

I've tried XBMC and Kodi several times over the years and I just find it non intuitive and unreliable.

Plex on the other hand is straightforward and simple.
