I've never once been told to put it on mine, if i ahd to though for that I would put livign with partner.
It's not relevant to salaries at all, it is only asked for Payroll, which is when the employee has been taken on and offered a salary.
The Revenue like to know this info so it has to be input onto the payroll system.

Why not say girlfriend/wife/fiance?
Never needed this on my payroll system or any document filed to HMRC on the employee's behalf.
I don't like the term 'boyfriend', sounds too temporary and juvenile.
