What do you REALLY think of Windows?

I actually considered not putting that in.. as I was sure someone wouldn't ask for a specific example lol. But windows generally speaking, never seems to have been good a managing memory (doing garbage collection), and just by installing/uninstalling leaves a lot of crap on the system that seems to slow it down over time. I don't really think it should be this way. I know it sounds daft, but I think the install of applications is 'too' intwined with the O/S itself.

For me, there really isn't an alternative to windows however. If I want to play games I have to use it, and I'm used to it, and generally I like it.

Firstly, Windows' memory management isn't bad at garbage collection and never has as far as I'm aware.

As for leaving crap on the system after an uninstall, contrary to popular belief, having unused registry keys does NOT slow a system down as the registry isn't usually searched, but rather specific keys are requested. If there are other files left on the system, that's the fault of the developer and all OSs are prone to this.

As for programs being intertwined with the OS, apart from files and registry keys what else are you referring to?

The Registry used to be poorly designed in terms of fragmentation and performance. But they overhauled its design from the ground up in Windows 2000. It's been perfectly fine ever since.
