I'm off to Florida next week and BestBuy/Walmart are selling 60GB Playstation 3's for $500 with the Bluetooth remote. (Approx £244)

Since I'm getting a 42" 1080P TV about a week after I get back from holiday I'm mighty tempted to go for it, but the only drawback is region encoding and warranty.

Can I buy a warranty in the UK like that Sony care monthly cost thing?
and can you import Blu-Ray films for near the price they would normally cost? Are most region locked?
I know they are quite reliable machines at least but I'd like some kind of warranty if possible, not 100% needed but it would be very welcome.

I know PS3 games are region free and I'm not too fussed about PS2 games so I'll look into importing them at a later date.

I just think it would be silly to miss out on a cheap 60GB PS3 especially because of my TV, I can't say Blu-Ray looked too special on my 720P 19".

No warranty possibilities at all (unless a third party offer something) from Sony directly.
Importing a blu-ray (USA/CAN) will easily be cheaper than buying one in the high street in the UK, and probably cheaper than buying it online in the UK as well. Most I have imported are £10-£17 quid. You would be hard pressed to find them that cheap in the UK (if you can, no-one has told me!!)
You can find lists of the unlocked region free disks @ http://bluray.liesinc.net/
I use an import USA site who actually test all their blu-rays on a UK PS3, but the above list is more than definitive.

I am surprised that you, a prolific poster of negative PS3 information, (usually factual to some degree) does not know the answers to this questions already. The cynic in me predicts another thread dissing the PS3 for whatever reason when you decide not to get one from the states and somehow Sony will be to blame ;) Sadly I like to give people chances to redeem themselves, that is why I answer your initial questions, yet still stick in a cheeky dig.

Darn, oh well the failure rate is low I guess. One problem though will be the volts, they aren't universal consoles are they? (The power supplies)

Good to know about the Blu-Ray that was the main concern as I'm not too fussed for the games lineup for now, that list with all the region codes is very helpful thanks.

Lol I knew some of these answers, kind of anyway I just had to double check. :p

It will work on our supply or the US one it doesnt matter, its the same PSU for all regions and its voltage and frequency sensing so it knows what supply its connected up to.

They are indeed universal consoles. You just need a standard kettle lead with a 5amp fuse. No convertors or fancy crap needed.

When you get it get Warhawk.

that is all.

Really it comes down to this...

1) Get the benifit of a USA machine if your a movie lover and import lots of USA movies available prior to the UK dates. This way you wont be restricted by the region coding that quite a few movies have, yet several dont have RC on them.

2) If you get it home and it goes wonky then your outta luck. Take this into account and really you may end up feeling the extra £100 or less youd spend on a UK one will be worth it for the Uk warrenty.

Personally id buy a lot of movies /gamesknown to be region free that will work and get the UK machine.

Youll find its an excellent machine, just will take the tail end of another year to really make it a great console with games. Blu Rays will blow you away with 1080/24 on your upcoming telly, trust me.

Yeah 1 seems the better option at this time mainly because it's mainly for movies at the moment and it's a limited offer because it's practically a gift really and it's to be had when I'm on holiday not after so I'm thinking the PS3 is a nice investment, even better if it still has the PS2 hardware in it, think they removed it now though.

I had a PS3 a few months back and yeah the machine was good indeed just a shame my TV kinda sucked for Blu-Ray and the games back then were even weaker than the current selection. Will pick up a few Blu-Ray titles over there, still got my Casino Royale!

Seems I'll take the risk on this one and just pray it doesn't break, will look out for some kind of third party warranty sometime too.

Yep probably going to buy Warhawk to give it a whirl perhaps, not too sure on that one though.

I would rather have a US PS3 than a European one purely for having the benefit of having a region 1 DVD player.

I would definitely go for one if you have the money. They are a fantastic piece of kit and for my money, the best unit of all 3 home consoles released. The games will come, Blu-Rays are here now and it has free online so you don't have a whole lot to lose as you already have an Xbox360.

Personally, if I had imported a US PS3 and it broke Id be tempted to head to a high street store (non gaming) and purchase a UK one, swap the consoles over in the boxes and take the US one back in the UK box. Obviously paying cash ;)

Can I ask a question here, too?

I'm going to take my PS2 back t'shop tomorrow as I have just had a bit of extra dosh through. Eventually, I would like to own both a 360 and a PS3. I'll get one of them tomorrow and the other next year sometime - probably around Easter. Would you advise buying the PS3 60GB now over the 360 so that you get all the goodies which have now been chopped or risk waiting until next year when perhaps the BC and extras will all reappear with a new DualShock 3-packaged PS3?

Grand idea, if a little naughty. :p

Im still pretty sure that early next year SCEE will announce the 80Gb or at least the full fat PS3 in the UK with a Dual shock 3 controller. If not and you really want a full fat version importing a US PS3 maybe the next best option. Easter will be a good time for PS3 owners with MGS4, Killzone 2, GT5 prologue etc all being out or soon will be then, so maybe wait till then. I don't think you will get a 80GB PS3 if they're announced for 350 with 2 games and HDMI lead at easter though.

although its now cheaper i would still personally wait till next year when you'll get the proper dual shock rumble controller, another SKU most probably and more exclsuives and Home sorted out. The way things are going with Sony at the moment you just don't know what they will try to throw at you next.

Aye, I think I will keep the PS2 and get a 360 Elite. At least that way, I will be able to catch up on the PS2 titles (with guaranteed compatibility) in all their rumbled glory and then get the cheapest PS3 next year when I'll have no need for BC.

Besides, how much longer can I go without playing Halo 3, Half-Life 2, Mass Effect, etc. Hehehe.

Just wondering if anyone has brought back an item from the states before like this, my Dad thinks we could get caught in the process and charged UK vat. Much chance of this happening?
