What do you think about this complaint I made?

About a month ago I purchased a couple of products from Molton Brown. Their stuff isn't cheap so I normally buy it as an occasional treat. After two weeks I developed an allergic reaction to one of the products so I ceased using it and contacted Molton Brown to let them know what had happened.

Unfortunately, in the meantime my girlfriend chucked out the product while doing a clearout of old and unused items. Molton Brown are now fobbing me off saying that because I am unable to send the item back to them for further investigation there is nothing they can do, and are simply offering me a collection of samples as a gesture of good will.

Do you think I'm being unreasonable in expecting a bit more from them? I'd happily accept a refund or an exchange for something of a similar value, but they are playing hardball. The reaction was really bad, it was a large, very itchy red rash on my arms. I have even sent them a picture of the rash to show that I'm not making it up.

If they continue to dig their heels in do I have any other option but to accept their offer of the samples?
 
It's not their fault you suddenly developed a reaction to it surely? Also if you've got nothing to send them back to test then they can't even see if something had gone amiss.

If I suddenly developed a peanut allergy but I still had half a bag of KP nuts in the cupboard I wouldn't be complaining to them.
 
Did you seek medical advice to actually prove that the product gave you the allergic reaction?

Got proof of purchase so you can actually request the refund?

Besides, it would be a bit strange to use something but only develop a reaction after a couple of weeks if the cause was purely that item. So if you cannot provide them with the item to check - which they will probably assume is somewhat convenient - how can you expect them to believe that their product is the cause?
 
This isn't US where they send you free stuff because it's cheaper than actually respond and they can't be bothered arguing with someone.
 
I think you're being pretty unreasonable personally. If I purchased an item from Tesco, ate it, got sick and then threw it away, I wouldn't expect Tesco to refund the item that I have binned, unless it was some kind of free-from product that I had a specific reaction to.

Take the free samples :)
 
If you are unable to return the remainder of the product for testing and analysis, then goodwill is all you can expect.

-edit also you had the reaction 2 weeks ago, and now you complain, without the evidence, bit of a shame really, as you could have kept some tried it again to make certain it was what caused the reaction, on a small area of skin.
 
How exactly do you propose they exchange the goods or refund you for them when you can't send them back, and why you feel that it entitles you to be annoyed by that?

They're not fobbing you off, you have nothing to return to them. It's like asking if I can return the meal I ate at a restaurant last week for a refund or exchange.

I can't believe you even made this thread. The entitlement complex is strong.
 
To be fair the only people I know who actually buy Molten Brown buy it to give to their grans and mums as Christmas presents so maybe they've done you a favour!

No a dig at you mate personlly but people "I'm entitled to" attitude is perhaps going a bit far these days??

I'm not sure that is entirely true about the time delay - some things you only develop an allergic reaction after your immune system has encountered it for the first time i.e. some people have 0 reaction to animal venom the first time they get stung or bitten and a severe reaction to subsequent incidents.

I've had it before with deodorants, etc. first few weeks no problem then I'd get a reproducible reaction to it - I just shrugged and moved on i.e. some people like myself have an allergy to nickel - most of the population don't (and similar stories with other allergies) and so on not something they can take into account with every product.

How can you refund or exchange without the item?

I think they are being quite good by offering to send samples just so you can clarify the issue.

Why do you think they should give you a refund or another product, this will put them out of pocket through no fault of their own.

Request a refund or an exchange with your gf, she seems to be the person to blame in all this!
