in the arse of england.
i.e. what's been the best to date in terms of value for money and longevity.

For my money its been the opteron 170 and the Q6600 which I am still running now with no real need for an upgrade as of yet. :) ramped up to 3Ghz with a decent OS behind it and it just cuts through what ever I want it to do. I used to be an Intel hater... This one changed my mind.

First proper Celeron (Mendocino) was a mental little overclocker, cheap and could out perform the fastest stuff you could buy at the time once it was OC'ed.

Had a dual Voodoo 2 12Mb rig back then - happy days :)

Barton 2500+ mobile. A quality chip :)

After that then maybe the Opteron 170 and the Q6600 as mentioned in the original post.

I would say the Core2 E/Q6600 chips are probably the 'best' with respect to value for money and longevity. The Barton 2500+ mobile runs it close though, as does the Mendocino Celeron 300A.

486 lasted for donkeys years

eye this is True, although I cant say any particular one as I had boat loads,

I486 DX 33
I486 DX2 66
AMD 486 DX 120 and a 133! very rare chip now the 133, I sold it to a friend for a fiver about five years back and the cheeky ******* made it into a key ring :( was in good working order too!

Either the E6600 OR THE Q6600, particularly the quad. got a stable 3.8ghz from mine at nice temps, i miss that cpu.

I fancied a new toy, got a q9550, 3.8ghz with ease, sold it and going i7, i like tweaking things:D

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the p4s wich hit 4.5ghz but yeh q6600 and 2500barton all time greats wander if the i5 wil b around long enough to make a namefor itself
