what do you think is the best CPU thats been made?

my amd athlon 64 3000+ venice core was rather special at the time. 2.7ghz from 1.8ghz it had more in it too but 300fsb is most boards limmit. nothing fancy now mind but it lasted me a good 3 years or so

266 K6 back in the day. It was probably actually clocked a lot lower, but I've got so many happy memories.

My AM2 X2 4200 is 3 years old and has been running at around 2.9ghz almost the whole time.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Intel Atom - not a fast CPU, but certainly a market changer.

For me it has to be the barton 2500+ I still have one running in a machine that I gave my sister. I purchased it in late 2003 it has been overclocked with the magic 400-415 fsb (3200+/3400+ speeds) with a slight bump in voltage since that day.

It has outlasted 2 nf7-s boards and is still being used day in day out. 6 years on an overclocked cpu cannot be bad.

Other than that this Q6600, bought it retail about a year and a bit ago, it has a very low vid and reaches 3ghz at stock voltage. Shame my board falls over anything over 3ghz.

While I was working as a techie, i show a computer that it didnt have any fan on it. Weirdly, it was working perfect and that was an Intel Pentium 1! lol

Too any x86 votes here! I remember being in awe of a PowerPC 604. The 603's have had a great longevity - plus remember that PowerPC is at the heart of each of the three major consoles out today :)

Place i work at is just about to go live on a pair of IBM boxes with 32 PowerPC chips in each...pretty impressive...stupidly expensive though...

Core i7-965XE :D

Bought 1 year ago seriously doubt in next 2 years time there is anything it cannot handle easily as software development is a long way behind the hardware now so 3 years for a CPU aint bad ;)

AMD FX

That chip gave me years of great gaming and its still going strong! At the moment the AMD FX55 is in my old rig running 2 Eve-Online accounts mining ice 23/7 and soon to be 3 accounts, I've had that chip since mid 2005 and its been worth every single penny!

Turk.
