I pose a serious question to you all.

I'm currently doing research into present and emerging web technology/services based around Web 2.0 (collaboration and sharing of information).

I've seen social networking sites make a big leap in the past few years and feel like it may have reached its peak, which means there maybe something new with an updated social and collaborative feel that could be seen in the next few years.

I'd like to know what you the people, users of the internet feel is the next major explosion on the web that we will not be able to do without.

I'm not bleeding telling you because I want to make money from it. ;)

It will probably further development of cognitive functions though, and that the web becomes further personalised around you. I.E look at google news and amazon, they give "suggestions". Basically this for everything and all interlinked so people can try to sell you more crap.

I know I'm not really answering your question, but I see social networking site's as a bad thing, they really annoy me. People putting up picture's and all the information you could ask for about themselfs. It's all sad.

The internet is a great thing, but it's got a lot of bad points to it. It seems to annoy me more than make me happy nowadays. I need to put up with it though, because it's my job basically :p

Thanks for a decent response as it still does relate. The more things I can learn from users and what they think the better for my research.

Oh a fellow Edinburger..... good evening sir!

Most of what is going to develop I would say a lot of the companies out there already have steaks in.... its increasingly hard to strike out, especially when it comes to net development.

In the olden days when the Internet wasn't so popular, you could meet a girl, invite her round, introduce her to all your mate's and family. You and only you knew what food she liked, what music she listened to. Now, 50 thousand people know what music she listens to, everyone knows what food she likes, what she wears, what she looks like...what her breasts look like, what bra size she is. Am I the only one that thinks thats a bad thing?

No worries, as for what I see in the future. I'm not entirely sure.

but folk don't remember every profile they come across do they?

i would say the next big thing has already started to develop.

Like people has said, more social interacting. Like myspace etc.

Or with a bit of like Microsoft collapsing on itself and Apple taking over the world ridding it of Bluescreens :D

But seriously, i think social interaction is the next big thing that has started, this forums for example i now broswe practically EVERY day. and i am recognising people by their sigs and type of comments etc.

thats true, this place is my homepage. But i wouldn't say this place is social, as people can and do come here just for advice, or for MM etc

It's only a bad thing if you let it become a bad thing. If people remember her profile then she was obviously worth remembering and if you're with her then you should see that as a good thing.

Would also be quite handy if you forgot anything about her, you could have a quick look at her profile and there'd be no drama because you've forgotten her favourite ice cream flavour or something equally as trivial.

Yes true, but i would still say its social for some people.

iCraig
Gilly
Penski
Beansprout

they were the first names i thought of that i see pretty much anytime of the day posting away plus just myself i have 50ocuk contacts on my Msn list and i'm not even popular really :p, some only spoken to for MM reasons but some i've spoken to and still do sometimes. Tupac for example, added him on msn about 3 years ago now and still speak to him nearly everyday

never met him though :) yet i still consider him as a pretty cool guy

Edinburgh rocks!

I feel like observing people in their daily activities and interests could give a better indication of what the next stage of development should be. Characteristics of people should be somehow integrated into the web. We can already share thoughts and write about ourselves in profiles, blogs, online videos and what not. But a lot of it is very static, for instance you're mood can change in hours, minutes, seconds. Your mood, attitude, facial expressions, taste in music, movies, clothing. Its on going change. I saw an idea posted by someone on a site that considered having more than one profile that you could select from depending on how you felt. Like different characters. I thought that was a good idea to encorporate into myspace since with that you have a single profile that you have to code.

Even though myspace allows people to be in control its still a time consuming process, probably one that people enjoy and some dont.

I think it would still come under social networking, although not to the extreme's of others.

I like forums, it's a place to chill, have a laugh etc, but there's no invasion of privacy, people don't need to know what you look like or where you live etc.
Does anyone, like me disagree with social networking sites(myspace etc)?

I think another developement, which is of course already underway is the voice communication software, like that voip for example. Which allows you to make phone calls over the internet. Although I havn't seen any major developements in this area recently.
