Hi all,

I'm buying a new system next week and I think I'm going to stick with these parts:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-170-AM)
Price: £141.95 (£166.79 Including VAT at 17.5%)

MSI K9N Platinum nForce 570 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-070-MS)
Price: £69.95 (£82.19 Including VAT at 17.5%)

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBNR) (MY-014-GS)
Price: £119.95 (£140.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

£389.92

If anyone else knows anything that may make the system better (keeping it under £400) let me know!

So will that intel cpu be faster than the x2? And I don't need delivery, it's 2 minutes away! :D

Also - I don't want to Overclock the cpu because I Don't really know what I'm doing :] So which is the best from standard speeds?

Much faster :D Conroe pwns AMD CPUs!

Overclocking is really easy and by now there are hundreds of guides out there on how to overclock a Conroe :D

How come the speed in Ghz is a lot slower on the intel?

CPUs these days don't rely on raw CPU speed. What really counts is how much the CPU can do per cycle. Basically the Conroe CPUs can do a lot more per cycle than AMD CPUs.

Before Conroe, AMD CPUs usually had slower clock speeds than their Intel counterparts, but the AMDs could do more per cycle.

A CPU works in cycles - the CPU speed. However, since new technology and new architectures has allowed more work to be done per cycle, the CPU speed doesn't need to be as high to achieve the same performance.

We can increase that performance through overclocking and making the CPU faster. However, CPU manufacturers wouldn't make much money if all their CPUs were running as fast as possible since it would cost about 700 quid a go! :D

Okay - So how's this system sound?

Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-127-IN)
Price: £154.95 (£182.07 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Gigabyte GA_945PL_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-064-GI)
Price: £55.95 (£65.74 Including VAT at 17.5%)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
Price: £124.95 (£146.82 Including VAT at 17.5%)

£394.63

Is the RAM any good in relation to the mobo and cpu?

Tis a good spec. GeIL DDR2 RAM is usually always on the top of the list for Conroe specs so it is a good choice. The mobo from what I have been told is pretty good. Not sure about its overclocking abilities though.

I think I may stick with AMD you know. To get a decent spec Intel is just a bit too high for me.

Even if you went for the cheapest Conroe stuff available you would still have a poweful computer that would show up any AMD system.

Okay, say I did go for the E6300, what are the factors I need to think of for overclocking? RAM? HDD?

EDIT: Do you know any good sites for shownig how to clock the E6300 well?

The important bits as far as overclocking is concerned is the CPU (E6300 is as good as it gets), the motherboard (that gigabyte ain't bad), and the memory (that memory is great).

Of secondary importance is the PSU which must be stout enough to handle the machine's power needs with stable electricity, and CPU cooling which must adequately dissipate waste heat from the CPU's cores.

Okay - So, this is the system I'm now looking at with all of your advice:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-126-IN)
Price: £115.95 (£136.24 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
Price: £89.95 (£105.69 Including VAT at 17.5%)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
Price: £124.95 (£146.82 Including VAT at 17.5%)

£382.87

----

I have a decent power supply: Tagan TG530-U15(530W).

I take it the standard heatsink & fan for the duo won't be good enough for the overclock? If it isn't what can I get that will do a good job? And do you know any tutorials specifically for overclocking the E6300 ?

I see that's only £23.44 - Do I need the heatsink that comes with the CPU or can I buy the CPU OEM?
