Hope this is ok in this section

Im looking into getting a sound system sort of thing to improve quality over that of the built in tv speakers

Was just wondering what others have used or experienced

I dont really think i need a 5.1 but maybe 2.1 or a soundbar which ever would be the best choice

What do you all use?

5.1 surround, playing a game like The Last of Us/Tomb Raider it is like you are in a movie.

If costs is prohibitive, headphones is a good way to go.

TV speakers when I am not gaming 'properly' and not fussed about sound like when playing minecraft or farming Destiny. All other times Sennheiser PC360 headset through Astro mixamp.

An Onkyo 5.1 home theatre system. It's quite modest but it's great and really adds depth to games. Unfortunately I haven't got the rear speakers in the best location but you still get a decent effect from it.

Ultimately though, pretty-much anything is a marked improvement from TV speakers. If you're going the soundbar route have a look at the Yamaha ones, they do one for around £100 which is said to be very good.

I'd never go back to TV speakers, it's like listening to music via a phone speaker.

Nice mixture here, i would say my budget is £250-300

Someone pointed me towards a nice yamaha bar however it simulates surround by bouncing off walls and that wouldnt work well in my living room/ position

I use a Denon X2000 Amp, Q-Acoustics 2000i 5 speakers and a BK Audio Gemini II sub woofer.

I find the audio to be as much a part of the game as the visuals. Surround sound brings game worlds alive in my opinion.

I use a Marantz PM6005 amp with B&W 685 speakers. It's a 2.0 setup, but the speakers are amazing so you get plenty of oompf from them. I don't have room for a 5.1 setup, but to be honest I'm more than happy with a 2.0 setup. It's a fair bit over your budget though if you bought them new. If you're willing to go second hand you can get much more for your money. My B&W 685 speakers only cost me £240 second hand, and they were £600 new at the time!

I completely agree, sound is so important. I played GTA V last gen on a decent TV with crap sound, and now I have good sound and a crap TV :p
