What do you use when you aren't using an SLR?

SLR only at the moment, am in the market for a compact though. Currently considering the Nikon p300 as it reviews well, specs well and I have brand loyalty to Nikon already from my DLSR kit. Alternatively, the Canon S95 is looking like a good contender.

Yet to use either, I shall report back once i've finished annoying the bloke in jessops and no buying anything ;)

You'd have to be minority crazy to buy a Nikon compact in my view, the P300 is no match for the S95 or the XZ-1 in usability, image quality (smaller sensor than the others by a good bit) and for some mad reason Nikon decided not to give it RAW recording functionality. A shame but I've yet to see a competitive Nikon compact (which is one reason the new '1' system interests me, if it's progress can Nikon chuck some features down to the compacts?).

Interesting view; the p300 is a good ~£100 cheaper than those you mentioned though.

Can you recommend anything else around the ~£200 mark?

I've got an old Fuji F10 which i still use as a compact, I've no intention of replacing it until it breaks.

Also an Olympus mjuII film camera I take out occasionally when i'm feeling hipsterish.

I use my Powershot G9 (although not as good as it once was) as it has full manual control and can shoot in RAW. That being said I haven't used it in a while, only on nights out with friends.

I all ways have my phone so the on board camera is used.
I do have a Casio EX-Z270 for a pocket camera.
I am thinking of buying a used Panasonic TZ 10 or TX20.
I would really like to have a Sony NEX5 as a pocket camera .

If you do please let me know, I'd be interested in what you have to offer :)

Will do!

King you're going mFT?! What about ultra wide for your landscape shots? The 7-14mm?

Quite possibly yes. Going to try out a couple of bodies and see how I get on. Probably go with the 9-18 for ultrawide, only slightly longer than the 10-20 on crop... inability to use filters on the 7-14 (and price!) is a bit of a killer for me. Add a couple of pankcakes and should be good to go.

Or I might just wimp out and buy a D7000 :p

It is cheaper true, but unfortunately it has plenty of deficiencies to go with the lower price. Your point is fair, if cost is an issue then there's not much with the same feature set as the P300 for £220 or so. However I'd say if you want the P300s feature set you'll likely be annoyed by it's shortcomings too. The S95 can be had for about £260-270 now the S100 has been announced, it'll likely come down further, I'd find the extra cash for that.

I've been using a GF1 with 20mm 1.7 for a while now. It's small and light enough to simply carry around in your hand then shove in a man bag when your not using it. In Italy I just walked around with it in hand all day, it doesn't need to go in a pocket ;)

My phone, it gives me images like this so I'm happy

Leica M9 or the Panny GF1 if I am in travelling mode. But to be honest the best camera is the one you have on you all the time so my iPhone 4.
