What do you want to see in the next iPod?

So you have other transfers going on at the same time, enough for it to be a bottleneck on a slow 1.8" hdd, that probably tops out at 20mBps anyway?

Why are you nitpicking at this?

My USB bandwidth is currently spread across

USB Headphones
USB External HDD
DSLR
Mouse
Keyboard
Printer

Regardless of whether all that is doing anything or not when I transfer data between my 3G iPod over Firewire it is considerably faster than when I do it through USB on mine, or my mums 4G or my brothers 6G

Why would Apple put FireWire 800 on? The tiny percentage of the market which have machines with the ports in would make it a complete waste of money. USB 2.0 isn't exactly slow.

I have around 17,252 songs in my library.. initial sync on my iPod took a good few hours via USB.

If it'd been on FireWire 800 it would probably take considerably less

Isn't there also a rumor going around it will be flash based rather than a HDD?

If so then what would the transfer rate be on a solid state disk? Maybe worthy of having firewire 800.

Transfer rates on solid state drives aren't any better, even the £300 samsung desktop drives are below usb 2.0 speeds.

It wouldn't because the ipod is the bottleneck, 17,252 songs x 4MB / 60MB = 1,150 seconds. That speaks for itself. Your sync is taking hours because of the ipod not usb.

Its just one of these things that really grinds my gears. People assume as the interface is faster the whole process is, when its the ipod itself which is the slowest part anyway.

Yep.

HD speed not usb.

I'd imagine 20 mb average, 30 mbps TOPS transfer rate.

Firewire? No point really at all! USB2 yes cos then you have the BW for other items, but then again your never using em all so your still not going to effect it THAT much.

Just going on what I have experienced when using USB and Firewire with several iPod's and machines.

Plus if the next one had Firewire support then it would save me using ANOTHER USB port :p

Sorry, seems I didn't know the iPod was the limiting factor.

I now withdraw my complaint :D;)
