Hi, thi is my first post so be gentle.
I have finally got enough money together to get an uber pc for my recrding studio. I have done as much research as i can to get an idea of what will be good for me and I hope i have got it right.

The purpose of this machine will be for audio production and that will be its only job. So i need it to be FAST and stable.
It will never go on the internet, it won't have windows media player on it etc. Just one purpose and one alone.
Here is the list i have come up with

MOBO
Abit IP35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £64.99

CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £114.99

RAM
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB) £59.99

HARD DRIVE
Maxtor Diamondmax 22 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (STM3750330AS)

OPTICAL DRIVE
Samsung SH-S202JBEBN 20x DVD±RW IDE Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) -

COOLER
Zalman CNPS7500-CU CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)

PSU
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)

GRAPHICS
Asus ATI Radeon EAH3450/HTP/256M 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express)

There are some things i am sure will be in this build. For instance the PSU, the coolers and the drives.
I am unsure about the motherboard, the ram and the graphics card.

Could anybody please let me know if they think this is a good list and if not any alternatives to the products above.

Cheers

Dave Major

looks good to me man

only thing i would say it the powersupply seems a little overkill that could easily do sli and if all your running is a 3450 go for one less.. 450W or 500W

Welcome to the forums, everything there is compatible. I take it you already have a good soundcard for the production itself? You might find that Samsung hard drives are quieter, they have a good reputation in that regard. You might also want to consider hard drive enclosure(s) to limit the noise still further.

I don't seem to see a case in the list either, do you already have one?

Will the programs you're using be multi-core ready? Because if not, would something lke the E8200 be better? Faster at single core applications rather than for multi-tasking?

Wow quick replies.

Im always a little wary of having too little power. I know 620 may be a bit of overkill so i'll look into the corsair 520w version.

Can i also ask, what is the main difference between the Corsair HX 620w (£88.11) and the Corsair TX 650w (£76.36)

I have put 2 corsair models in builds for friends and love how quiet they are so im gonna stick with a corsair but are they all just as quiet as each other?

semi-pro waster- yeah i already have a soundcard (m-audio delta 1010) so i'm ok on that front. Yeah i already have a case sorted.

I'll look into the samsungs.

iviv-yeah i use cubase 4 as that is multi core ready.

Will the Abit MOBO be a bottleneck. I'm not sure exactly what could cause it to slow down my system. So i looked ot the fsb and saw it is 1133. Any other factors?

Cheers

Also meant to ask.
What about the acoustic foam pack that youc an by.

To me it just looks like ordinary egg box foam cut specifically to fit into certain parts.
Would this drastically reduce volume and also would the cost of that be increased heat in the case?

Cheers

The difference between the HX and TX series is that the HX is a modular unit basically so you only need attach the cables you will be using. The HX series are all made by Seasonic, I'm not sure who the OEM for the TX series is.

If you use the acoustic foam then yep, you will reduce the internal volume (not massively important given you don't have a huge video card) and it will increase the heat since it acts as insulation so you may need to compensate with a large low RPM fan to increase airflow.
