What does the 'query' represent in university paper grades?

I'm having difficulty getting something from Google here. I'm just looking through some old university papers. What does the query stand for in a grading?

For instance, one of my papers was graded B?+. What does that actually mean, borderline B/B+?

No idea, never seen this, was it just one tutor, or was it across the board?

I heard other students receive this before. It's pronounced "B query plus".

? is the same key as /

typo

Nope.

EDIT: Page 129 in this link answers the question. I can't copy and paste since it's from Google Books, but basically the 'query' is a very subtle difference in the grading system.

It is also mentioned in this article:

It is notable that many of the mysteries belong to the shrouded business of examining undergraduates. Far into the summer, rooms full of dons argue passionately about whether Rupert or Fiona deserves a 2.1 or a 2.2. Like too many others in the ancient universities, this process is secret, Byzantine and uncontrolled. When, in Oxford, I came to examining in the school of philosophy, politics and economics in the 1980s, it meant interpreting "sums" of 16 initial marks for each candidate, presented as beta-beta-alpha-query-plus or alpha-beta-minus-minus. It took 20 dons a mind-numbing week to sift through the several hundred candidates. In time, as chairman of this rigmarole, I got the whole thing computerised, but not before meeting passionate opposition from dons who believed that numbers lack the diamantine precision of alpha-beta-minus-query-plus.

Odd. I would assume this paper wouldn't count towards any final marks then? And the question mark, along with the grade, is just meant as a level indicator? Borderline, or bigger margin of error?

I'm out. Out of interest, does this apply to UK universities?

Phone the lecturer/tutor and ask them what the heavens they mean; ask them if they think 9k a year is acceptable for this standard of unclear service.
