'in times of prosperity it is the fattest pig that goes to the butchers first'

does that mean that if you keep eating and you get as fat as a pig you begin to look like a meal hence you would be a good pig to slaughter?

what do you all make of it? what does it mean to u?

I interpreted it as:

When things are going good, it is the greediest of people (or people that have benefitted the most out of the prosperity) that get stung first.

It's an encouragement toward efficiency, it's a metaphor for when times are good (prosperity) the most inefficient businesses (fattest pigs) get taken over, go out of business first (to the butchers). Something like that I would suggest anyway, a bit of context might help.

This basically it's not or wasn't originally a dig at fat people :p

I'd interpret it as a cautionary note to those who are greedy and that when things are going well you shouldn't take things for granted. The more you have, the more you can lose.

Don't overdo it/be too greedy.

That's how I read it.

Essentially when things are tight it's the ones who take the most that will be dealt with first.

Could be used in many situations, imagine if company's are struggling getting rid of the higher paid people saves them more money with one cutback then laying of multiple lower paid staff.

That's a partly inane quote.

The first part('in times of prosperity') is inconsequential because the second part is true without it. 'the fattest pig goes to the butchers first' is sufficient to make the point and it's the equivalent of 'the lawn mower cuts the tallest grass first'.

The issue I have with this interpretation is that I don't believe it's true. As we've seen over the last few years, the most greedy people don't end up going to the butchers first, it's the thinnest pigs that do.
