What does this phrase mean to you?

Weird, I thought that having your legs crossed would refer to being in a sitting position, therefore you can't change the world unless you get up off your arse and do something, so stop sitting there with your legs crossed.
Clearly it is on an entirely different level, aimed at women in business, and referring to don't sit meekly by, and watch opportunity run away from you.

Damn, that's pretty much verbatim what I was going to say. That was the first thing that came to mind when I read the (admittedly stupid) saying.

If you want to change the world you have to open your legs.

It clearly means open them up and get some action. I wonder what the author had on their mind when writing that.

Sounds exactly like the sort of "Powertalk" I can imagine an apprentice contestant saying, thinking they are being edgy.

What was the context of that phase? What followed it?

“You can’t change the world with your legs crossed” – just one of the many tips handed out by experts at Gather 2016, a huge training event held each May to inspire women across the industry.

Consensus seems pretty mixed on here. If they did mean, "You can’t change the world sitting down", why didn't they just say so?

We had a work email the other day (you know the ones, spammed to every single employee worldwide) aimed at empowering women in the workplace.

All cool I think to myself, I'm happy for gender equality, women's rights etc. So I started reading, and the first line said "You can’t change the world with your legs crossed”...

I can't begin to imagine why someone thought that was appropriate!

depends what sort of workplace you're in :-)
