What to choose for a new website? A domain name of the company name, e.g. DynamicX (so ... www,dynamicx.co.uk)

... or would you go for the keyword domain names ... so if I was DynamixC sold car accessories would it better to try and get keywords, while sacrificing company name, e.g. www,newcaracessories.co.uk.

purely a new online business

I'm thinking towards the latter.

(this is all hyporthetical)

I would always take the company name first, then depending on traffic coming via search engines and the keywords being used, I might venture into purchasing keyword domain names which redirect to my company site (Although in hindsight, perhaps redirection would hinder any possible SEO benefits?).

It does strike me stereotypically as a slightly "naughty" thing to do, but if it's business and keyword domain redirection gets you more hits...

Definitely company name. Sites that have general catch-all names reek of cheapness, and as mentioned, SEO.

I think keywords in domain name help a little bit, if you're into SEO

If you're selling gear, though, then being found easier= more sales possibility

Does keyword domain names really look crap? I mean, when I've mentioned the <title> bar as part of important things for SEO ... people have said "oh I've never looked at that, what does it do?". So they obviously are just looking at the main window and how much the products are.

I think the URL has a huge impact, but I agree it takes away from the coolness.

For example, first result when searching for "car accessories" in google is www.extremeautoaccessories.co.uk, with the accessories in bold.

If accessories is found in the url, title, headers and body text, and links come from similar websites, google can't resist putting you very high indeed. It's all about the combination.

It depends what your selling really and if you have a brand in mind...

E.g if you are selling designer wallets, then www.designerwallets.co.uk would be highly generic, descriptive, good for SEO and may get some typein traffic also. However if you are trying to build up a company brand then go for a company name.

i'd say if you can get a descent keyword generic name then go for that. it looks far more professional and like above it's a help for SEO.

Remember to stick with just 1 domain though. Many people think that purchasing other domains with keywords in them will help, when infact its the oppisite as google sees it as "cloaking".
