What don't you like about current generation consoles/games?

Whilst there is a lot of good things about the 360 and PS3 there's still so many things wrong with the current gen.

For me it has to be the focus around achievements/trophies. It adds nothing to the games you're playing and, in fact, only serves as an indicator of how much time someone spends playing games. This is not a good thing for the masses..but good for the developers and they exploit it to the point that it affects the way in which you play and enjoy a game. Just think how (some) of you now play games - not as and when for a bit of fun, but by being drawn back in to 200 objects in a game, kill 2000 people online or (argh) host a 1000 online games. It's insane.

I also don't like the fact that developers worry more about graphics than gameplay and spend more money on the promotion of games (making it out to be more than it is) than anything else. You see a game, looks great and has so much potential to be amazing and yet when you get it, pop it in and start playing...blah, same ol', same ol'.

I guess this could lead on to asking what you want from the next generation? What's missing now that could be implemented in the next round?

This generation should be called the brown generation :(

All the games use the same brown pallet that starts to get annoying.

Pretty much that.

As long as the game looks ok (as in not looking like something from 10 years ago) I really couldn't care less if its not as photo realistic as it possibly can be. I would much rather they focus their time/resources into the content creation and gameplay making sure that we get our moneys worth instead of these 7-8 hour games we seem to be seeing more and more of.

Also many developers need to get their priorities right and stop shipping out broken/buggy games, I hate the idea of get it out of the door as fast as possible and fix it with a patch.

I've been disappointed by the number of good franchises that have been ruined this generation. I had been really looking forward to Saints Row 2, Mercs 2, NFS Undercover and plenty more; they (along with the games that have actually been good) were the reason I opted to spend a lot of money on a PS3, and instead I find myself disappointed and with a collection of games far smaller than it should be.

Perhaps it's time the console manufacturers started putting more pressure on the developers to not release half-hearted attempts.

Developers seem to have put having a steady framerate at the bottom of the list for priorities
Microsoft Points
The fact Sony force you to top up your "wallet" with a fiver even if you only wanna buy something that's £2.

Yes those businesses and wanting to exploit their properties and make money tsk tsk. Videogames are a luxury not a necessity.

Erm, i'm not sure i get how what you're saying ties to what margaret is complaining of.

He's right on the wallet front tbh, it's not as if cards can only be debited with a minimum of a fiver, it doesn't make them any more money and the consumer doesn't benefit. I see no point.

edit - No more of that dear, stop trying to circumnavigate the rules dude or you'll be suspended (and your name changed to something more awful than Margaret!!). Jedi

The Sony, i think, will be down to some minimal transaction thing since they are using credit cards direct.

trophies/acheivements are excellent additions but its down to developer to make interesting things to do. the sooner that they learn the challenge > grind, the better it will be, but until then i will just ignore the games that make me grind :p

i currently hate all the greedy companies that purposely exclude things from games at release date so that they can release expensive DLC. capcom/namco seem especially bad for this

either make something truly special and worth paying for or just give it to us for free.

Definitely downloadable content which is way way overpriced you even have to pay for roster updates and things like that.

Patches should be part and parcel of a service after you bought the game.

And a future feature which I will hate and predict that is coming :

Games will come with cd keys so you cant play second hand games on xbox live if the cd keys been activated.

Microsoft points annoy me the most - I'd rather just buy the individual item at the price it is and not buy incriments of points, and I'd rather it just be in cash rather than having to convert it into a pseudo-currency in your head to figure how much you are spending (ish).
