Okay I have ordered my new motherboard which is pci -e 2 etc Ordered graphics and also memory & CPU. going from an agp board so I will have to purchase the cables to convert my ide hdd and prob dvd writer. Will the motherboard come with a selection of cables as standard. is there anything else i need to buy to connect this new hardware together. Gonna stick with my psu for now to see how it gets on.

There is usually one IDE port still on most motherboards these days, so you should be ok if you connect both drives up with one cable.

Unless its a b-grade purchase then all the cables should come with it too.

PK!

can you list your
- psu model and the connectors it has. this is especially important if you have brought a high end graphics card and your PSU is quite old, since you may not have all the connectors you need.
- graphics card you brought to help us determine if adaptors are needed or not.
-MB you got

the majority of MBs allow up to 2 IDE devices to be connected to the MB as they usually come with 1 IDE port.

most retail Boxed MBs come with a selection of cables to get you started, more expensive boards may come with all the cables you will ever need for that MB.

My psu is 350 watt i understand that i will need to get a more powerful one but as pennies allow for now i will try it out. I am not sure of the connector to the mobo from the psu it I think its kind of a block of things that plug in my exisiting mobo. I need to take the cover off really and examing what make the psu is but I got it with a case about 12 months ago so its not too old. I have ordered the ati hd 4850 gpu

have you checked that your psu has a 24 pin power connector and that it has the required extra power connector for the cpu ????

also does it have a pcie power connector for the HD4850 ????

extra power connector for the cpu can you explain this I though processors just drank the juice straight from the mobo ? will prob have to get an adaptor for the psu to the ati 4850 I will check the make n model of the psu this evening and then ask peeps on the forum if it comes with what i need.

It's a black and yellow wire coloured cable. It either has 4 pins or 8 pins and it plugs into the motherboard near the CPU socket.

On the picture it's the black 8 pin socket on the right side of the picture. On your board it'll either be 8 pin like that one is, or it'll be 4 pins.

yes my mobo has like a four wire block connector with 2 yellow and two black wires so this must b the cpu feed then.
Yes, it will be. If your motherboard has an 8 pin connector however you can safely and easily plug the 4 pin cable into the 8 pin cable and it'll work fine. The other 4 pins are not totally essential.
