After reading "What's in your boot" thread, I am putting the basics into the boot but when I got to the Engine Oil part, I am a little stuck. Went to Halfords and I am confronted with about a dozen different brand/types. There are synthetic ones, ones for sports car (are they better?).

What do you get?

The car is a only a standard Yaris 1.8L Petrol.

5w30 semi-synth from memory.. check to see what oil was put in on the last service, best to top up with the same oil :)

I'm supposed to use mineral oil but use semi 10-40

I use castrol gtx normally stock up on it when it invariably pops up cheaply every so often

What oil does the handbook say it needs?

Should have thought of that, i keep forgetting the car comes with a manual lol

It lists 2 types as the Manual is for all Toyota Yaris'

1KR-FE Engines & 2ZR-FE Engines.

Turns out 1 KR-FE is the 1.0L ones so thats out

leaving the 2ZR-FE

Looks right, which it says:-

SAE 0W-20 is the best choice, if SAW 0W-20 is not available then 5W-30 may be used until the next oil change.

Castrol Edge 0w30.

Though not sure how much of a help what I put into my completely different car is to you, shouldnt you be asking us what you should get not what we get? :p

My noob knowledge in engines thought there were only 2 types, oil for Diesel and oil for Petrol. Pistons are Pistons right? :p

Only did I realise when standing in the engine oil aisle I as confronted with more selection than what Durex offers. lol

The correct type will be in the handbook. If it is anything like the t-sport that went before it, it will be 5w30 semi synthetic.

Silkolene 10w50 pro s for the scooby
Fuchs titan xtr 10w40 for the diesel metro as it's the cheapest that met the top oil standards for derv.
