What ever happend to cheats?

Mortal Kombat and it's one button fatality cheat kept me amused for hours. I used to go thru all the players and all their fatalities/friendships etc just for giggles.

I'll always remember Drivers cheat code of uuddududuudd :)

I also miss cheats. They ass so much longevity to the game. The Toca series cheats were always good as well.

iirc the console version relied on codes printed in gaming magazines. With the Amiga version it was easy really. You would start a game with say 5 lives. Freeze then type a command into the AR that said how many memory locations hold the value of 5. You would probably get a list of about 40,000 locations. you then un-freeze, lose a life and then re-freeze. You enter another command that says out of the 40,000 locations, how many have changed from 5 to 4. This would usually narrow it down to a couple of hundred. you just kept going like this and would usually find it within 3 or 4 steps. then you either lock it or set it to whatever you want as often as you want. You could use it for anythng. lives, ammo, score, money.

I remember cheating with the score on Jimmy Whites Wirlwind Snooker. The summary for the game was "mame beats jimmy with a suspiciously good 2000 to 147":p which is possible via fouls if you think about it

You can do the exact same thing with a program called Cheat engine for pretty much any game on the PC, Had much fun getting 9999999999999 score on that windows pinball game and having people wonder how the hell i did it . Also had another play through of FF7 but gave myself buffed stats and the like.

It works in exactly the same way as you described :)

Games got a lot easier.

I would agree with this but games get different, we have a range of games and genrally back in the day it was one difficulty, now we have easy normal hard extreme, tbh I want to play current gen games once only, not got time to play the same game a 2nd time and genrally the hardest needs to be unlocked first WTF being a kid in the 90s you had to make do with a game for yonks, now its ten a penny for a game.

Did anyone ever try the nude lara cheat that was posted for a laugh in some PS mag years ago? I didnt but a knew a few that tried even after i told them it was made up.

IDSPISPOPD is the one I always remember :D

Also, Impulse 9

BARRAL on DK:C on the SNES as well.

There was one I remember from the original Tomb Raider game, not sure if it was a button code or if it was done using an action replay cartridge. Got so excited like you do at that age and it was infact a total let down :D Its been ages since I used a button code or word so I dont remember many. Bewareoblivionisathand is one for Turok I think? some of the GTA codes. I think my favourite "cheat" was the predator mode for Goldeneye 64 multiplayer using the action replay cart. So much fun on archives blending into walls hunting other players.

Haha the toca cheats, driving round in a baby pink car (chevvy wasn't it?) or having a tank and setting damage to full and shooting all the other cars.

GTA did seem to be the pinnacle of cheats though. Loved them in the old pc versions, only one I can remember though is suckmyrocket. Probably used them most on San Andreas setting flying car, killing everyone until you got a helicopter then out running the helicopter in a car.

'Cheese Steak Jimmys' and 'How Do You Turn This On' for AOE II back when devs had a sense of humour!

Anyone remember the easter egg at the end of duke nukem on the sega saturn, was a little tank game. So awesome, wish I could play it again now :(
