What ever happened to LAN gaming?

Live in Orkney islands mate. You find me one that can guarantee me less than 50ms ping and I'll be very, very impressed ;)

Oh for LAN modes and Manual IP based Connection options.

Sorely sorely missed.

Joining:
Console > connect a.b.c.d:27015

Or Hosting:
Console > sv_lan 1

Job done. These days LAN modes do not work, are far too complicated or are simply not implemented at all.

Screw carrying my rig round to a mates. The case weighs enough, then there's the monitor, peripherals and the fact I have a couple of grands worth of kit being moved... no thanks.

I can see the appeal, but I'd rather keep it over the internet, can still have a laugh with a few beers etc. And if you really want to meet in RL, go to the pub and leave the tech at home where it's safe.

I was quite looking forward to the OcUK lan but not sure what went on with that. Never been to a lan but always liked the idea for ****s and giggles.

Most of my memories of small scale LAN gaming seem to be of me and a mate spending hours trying to get whatever game we wanted to play to talk to the other, and about half an hour of actual gaming.

Did have some absolutely epic Doom 2 and Warcraft 2 sessions though, so much more fun when you can see the other guys expressions :D

I have many fond memories of crashing the printers on the school network when playing C&C : Red Alert

The multiplayer only worked using IPX/SPX which used to interefere with some of our big printers and caused them to do all kinds of crazy **** lol.

Happy days.
